Mohamed Salah was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday. By directly contributing to both goals, the 32-year-old became the first player to reach double figures for goals and assists in all competitions for a team from Europe’s big five leagues this season.

Yet despite reaching this landmark, Salah is not the leading Egyptian for goal contributions in the top divisions across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain in 2024/25. That honor falls to Omar Marmoush, who has 11 goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt.

He is being hotly tipped to move to the Premier League soon, with a $77m (£60m/€73m) fee reportedly what it will take to seal the deal. With Liverpool said to be one of the teams interested in Marmoush, he could effectively become Salah’s heir for both club and country. He could help the Reds to get one over title rivals Manchester City too.

It was reported last week by Bild that Chelsea and Manchester United are keen to sign the Frankfurt man. It’s little surprise Marmoush is in high demand given his record, but he has allegedly said it is his dream to move to Liverpool.

On Sunday, Football Insider reported that City has joined the chase for the 25-year-old. With Erling Haaland their only attacking player with more than one league goal so far this season, no wonder Pep Guardiola wants to freshen up his front line.

However, the story also noted that Marmoush will only leave Frankfurt if he can be guaranteed regular playing time, which supposedly makes a move to City less likely. In fairness, there is not currently much space in Liverpool’s front three either, though that position could quickly change if someone chose to leave the club.

Marmoush’s impressive form in 2024/25 has changed the tier of club taking in interest in acquiring him. Nottingham Forest reportedly tried to sign the Egypt international this summer but was unable to complete the deal. With respect to Nuno Espirito’s side, they won’t be able to attract the top contributor to goals in the big leagues, the player’s current standing in the game.

Wherever Marmoush ends up next, it has been claimed Frankfurt will not be entertaining bids in January. He is under contract until 2027, so while a deal next summer would make sense, there is no need for the Egyptian’s current club to rush. Assuming the clubs said to be interested genuinely are, it would be a coup for Liverpool to sign the player ahead of City.
