Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have been told how long they have left at the top as they stall over signing new deals.

The Reds duo have been two of the standout performers in the early stages of the 2024-25 season after helping Liverpool win all three of its Premier League fixtures prior to the international break and show no signs of slowing down.

Van Dijk played a major role in helping Liverpool keep three clean sheets and remain the only side in the top flight yet to concede a goal before the most recent round of fixtures, while Salah hit the ground running with three goals and three assists in as many games.

But despite their on-field heroics, it is their off-field situations which continue to create headlines, with the pair both still out of contract at the end of the season after so far failing to agree to new terms - or at least confirm whether this is their last campaign at Anfield.

Both Van Dijk and Salah are also now in their thirties and aren't getting any younger, which has thrown up some debate as to whether Liverpool will offer them bumper new deals - both in terms of length and wages.

But as a result of their individual starts to the season, former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit is confident they can continue operating at the highest level for years to come - and therefore deserve new contracts.

Speaking to topoffshoresportsbooks.com, he said: "Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk look like they have a couple of years left at the highest level, no doubt. They are both such magnificent players and have been magnificent players at the club for years and years.

"Are Salah and van Dijk the future of the club? At 32, and 33 respectively, you would say that they aren’t, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be given new contracts. Both players are such a fantastic example to anyone at the club, and, on the pitch, they have so much to offer."

Van Dijk has already publicly said that he wants to stay at Liverpool, so at least he has put his cards on the table, although Salah gave his strongest hint yet that this is his last year at the club by directly saying after the win over Manchester United that this is his final year at Anfield - although later clarified the comments a little.

Since then, however, Salah's agent, who is also both his lawyer and advisor, caused quite the storm after taking to social media to quash any of the recent rumblings about the Egyptian star's recent contract rumors.

Ramy Abbas Issa took to X (formerly Twitter) last week with a scathing rant towards the media, writing: "FYI – all those ‘journalists’ who imply having ‘inside information’ about Mohamed’s future are just making claims/posts based on absolutely nothing. Just click-------. 'Sources close to Mohamed' don’t exist. This post is really just to tell you that they don’t know."

As things stand, neither Van Dijk or Salah - and Trent Alexander-Arnold, for that matter - have signed new deals with Liverpool, although there are strong suggestions that talks are already underway with the players, offering optimism that the Reds will not lose them on free transfers at the end of the season.
