Darwin Nunez has expressed his delight at marking his return to the Liverpool starting line-up with a goal but is adamant Arne Slot's side will not become carried away by their strong start to the season. Nunez opened the scoring with his third strike of the campaign as the Reds strengthened their Premier League lead with a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Nunez had been benched for the midweek Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen but has started the last four Premier League games following the absence through injury of Diogo Jota.

And the forward said: "At this moment, I feel happy to have minutes, happy to score another goal for Liverpool.

"I think we did a good job defensively, and attacking I think we were good too. I feel happy, as I said – happy for the team that we have been doing things well and that is showing when we play.

"We have to continue working, with our feet on the ground. We haven’t won anything yet and there’s a lot left to do."

Nunez has linked up with the Uruguay squad for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers at home to Luis Diaz's Colombia and away to Brazil.

Liverpool head into the international break with a five-point lead at the Premier League summit, and are also top of the Champions League table and into the League Cup quarter-finals.

Nunez, though, has joined the Reds squad in shutting out discussion from outside about what could be possible this season.

"As I always say, I’m focused here on Liverpool, we don’t look outwards," he said. "Hopefully at the end of the season (we can reach) the goal and we can celebrate it with the people, so that they are the ones who have to celebrate with us the most."
