Sean Dyche has thrown down the gauntlet to Nathan Patterson to end the Everton injury woes that have plagued he defender since leaving Rangers.

The 23-year-old is inching closer to an end to his nightmare spell on the scenes with appearances for the B team and at training behind the scenes at Goodison Park. However, the Scotland right-back has not played a senior match for the Premier League outfit since rupturing his hamstring during a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea in April - which forced him to have surgery and miss Euro 2024 with his absence continuing into the new season.

Patterson has seen his Goodison Park career blighted by injury knocks after making a £11million switch from Rangers in January 2022. Having been signed by Rafa Benitez, the Spaniard was shown the door just days after the deal was completed with Patterson being forced to fight for minutes during Frank Lampard's tenure before a knock abruptly ended the campaign for him for the Toffees.

He was then relegated to the sidelines by the Chelsea legend, Patterson appeared to be showing his best form under Dyche - before he picked up a knock in January during a clash with Fulham that kept him out for months before suffering a similar fate at Stamford Bridge. But Dyche now expects injury woes to begin to ease for the defender and some of his teammates.

Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti are inching closer to a return with the Premier League in cold storage for the international break. The boss admits the key task for the players to avoid another injury hammerblow - as he specifically namechecked the Rangers academy graduate.

The Everton boss told the Liverpool Echo when quizzed about his list of absentees: "The challenge is, if you are playing the games, not getting them re-injured. We are trying to come through that, we're looking at the stats and facts, trying to judge the right time to get these players games but certainly they are the main two and [Nathan] Patterson is coming back stronger as well but they are the main two, Youssef and Broja, who will need that games programme but they're building up to that now."
