HAVING already been crowned the toast of the region, Penketh Panthers Netball Club have now received national acclaim.

The club, which is based at Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub and is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, has been named as England Netball’s National Community Club of the Year having already won the north west award.

And the timing could not be better, with the club celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

As well as giving adults and children from reception age upwards the chance to play the sport they love, Penketh Panthers have also organised several community events such as litter picks, a “Bonkers Bingo” fundraising night and heart screenings for players.

“I first got involved with PPNC when I was looking for a hobby for my two girls,” club chair Vic Bellamy said.

“They were Year 5/6 at the time and couldn't find a pastime that kept them interested.

“As soon as they started netball, they loved it. I did too and I started to help at training and gained my Level 2 qualification in coaching – I've coached ever since.

“There was just one team when my girls joined. Fast forward 10 years and we have grown beyond recognition, and my girls still play.

“I just love everything about Penketh Panthers.

“It's not just about netball – we have fun and forge friendships for life. I hope I'll be coaching and playing for another 10 years

“We really want to give this recognition to our volunteer coaches and committee members who work tirelessly to provide a fantastic environment for our young people to thrive and opportunities for adults who thought their playing days were behind them.”

The club is currently on the lookout for sponsorship to help fund equipment for coaches and players.
