NBA G League player Terry Roberts shot outside nightclub in Philadelphia

NBA G League player Terry Roberts was shot in the upper chest outside a Philadelphia nightclub on Sunday, according to published reports.

WHYY-TV in the Philadelphia area reported that Roberts, 23, was shot and seriously wounded by a stray bullet outside a nightclub in the Olney section of Philadelphia on Sunday.

Roberts, who plays for the Long Island Nets, was initially placed on a ventilator in critical condition at Einstein Medical Center, but it was removed on Monday and he was able to talk with his parents. Doctors say Roberts will survive.

He had driven to Philadelphia with a teammate over the weekend. Police found Roberts shot outside the 5th Street Lounge around 12:45 a.m. Roberts and his teammate had stopped at the bar, and as they approached they found they had walked into the crossfire of a gunfight that had broken out on the street, and Roberts was struck.

"It's been tough," Roberts' father, Terrance, told 6ABC in Philadelphia. "An avalanche of emotions, internal pain and handling the situation at hand."

Police say four suspects fled in a grey Nissan Altima. An off-duty security guard fired at the suspects' vehicle. No weapon was recovered, and police are investigating.

"He's (Terry Roberts) a miracle," Roberts' mother, Allison, told CBS in Philadelphia. "I'm just going to tell you that. The doctors themselves said that he is a miracle."

Roberts came to Bradley as a junior in 2021-22 after two seasons with Florida Southwestern State. He was an elite point guard and earned Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year honors and was an all-MVC first-team selection.

Roberts led the Braves with 14.5 points per game and 4.1 assists, ranking ninth in the Valley in points and first in assists. He was MVP in Bradley's Sun Bowl Invitational tournament title and scored at least 20 points in six different games during Bradley's 17-14 (11-7 in conference) season.

He surprised the Braves with his transfer out of the program after the season to the University of Georgia.

After his collegiate career ended, Roberts won a spot in the NBA G League, and this season was playing for the Long Island Nets. He has averaged 7.2 points and 2.9 assists in 19 games for the Nets this season.

The Long Island Nets said in a statement to CBS New York:

"Terry Roberts was the victim of a crime on Sunday morning in Philadelphia, and we are in the process of gathering more information about the incident. He is currently in stable condition, and he is expected to make a full recovery. Our thoughts are with him and family at this time."

Current Bradley Braves who played with Roberts in 2021-22 include guard Connor Hickman and forwards Malevy Leons, Darius Hannah and Connor Linke.
