How Neil Lennon killed the Celtic mole as Brendan Rodgers told 'forensics' hold the key to stopping team sheet leaks
Brendan Rodgers isn't the first manager to hit out at the infamous Celtic mole - as Neil Lennon once cracked down and managed to stop it 'for a while.'
Speaking after the Hoops' rampant 6-0 win over Aberdeen in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, Rodgers said he'll be doing everything he can to find the person who has been leaking his teamsheets before games. For the second match running, the Celtic team had been correctly leaked by an anonymous source on social media before it was announced by the club, and Rodgers said whoever is publishing it 'isn't a Celtic supporter' - urging them to cut it out and stop giving the opposition an advantage.
Back in 2019, Lennon faced the same problem. And he even got the FORENSICS out to get to the bottom of it. Speaking on BBC's 5 Live last year, he said: "Even at Celtic, in my second spell, we would pick the team a day before. Then the team would be out on the wires at like 7pm that night. You're thinking 'it's coming from somewhere it's coming from somewhere in the building'. Sometimes, even the players can do you in if they're maybe out the team. It wouldn't have happened 10-15 years ago but it's such a common trend now. I am wary of naming a team a day before the game but it's what the players like.
"We played Jonny Hayes (in September 2019), there's absolutely no way anybody could have known we were going to play Jonny Hayes on the left wing. I swear, at 6.30pm (the night before game) it's all over Twitter. I was raging, you are just giving the opposition an advantage here. Because either someone is getting paid money for it or they are giving it to a betting company, or this guy is feeding them a few... I don't know. It was just so wrong on so many levels.
"It wasn't leaked to the media, it was leaked to somebody and this guy would put it on Twitter. Even under Brendan, nine times out of 10 he was bang on with the team. Somebody in the dressing room or the building is doing this. We tried all sorts to stop it. I said we are bringing in forensic computer IT guys to check your phones and blah blah.. And it stopped for a while. But then, bang, it started again."
Rodgers may have to resort to similar methods if it keeps up. In the end, the heads-up didn't help Jimmy Thelin much as his team were thumped in a statement result for the Hoops. But that didn't stop Rodgers from hitting out at the mole. He said after the game: “There are no real secrets in football, that’s the reality. But it’s not nice when it gets out there. And especially if it's from Celtic supporters.
“It might feel great for someone's ego to put it out and pass it on to other people. But as a manager, I can tell you that I've had that before with opposition teams. And when I've got to know about it, it has really helped me in my preparation - and it has helped me win games.
“So whoever is putting it out, if it's someone from Celtic, you're not a Celtic supporter. Because you're not helping Celtic. We will do everything we can to find out (who it is). But I don't get angry about it. It's the modern world now, isn't it? There's so much communication. But I’d like to think it won't be until you play Celtic and you're standing in front of them that you feel our intensity. You can never know that until you play against us."
