Newcastle United fan group 'Wor Flags' have put their plans to honour Kevin Keegan on hold in light of the team's recent form. The club legend was set to be the subject of a St James' Park flag display in Wednesday's clash with Liverpool at St James' Park.

Now, the group say they will save the tribute for a later date, insisting 'something different' is needed in the stands as Eddie Howe's look to get back on track. The decision comes after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, where Newcastle failed to register a single shot on target.

This week brings the visit of runaway league leaders Liverpool, who stretched their advantage at the top of the table to nine points by beating Manchester City on Sunday. Arne Slot's side arrive on Tyneside as the only side in the top flight who have found 'consistency' in the words of Howe.

Wor Flags recently made a big push for donations to ensure they could give Keegan a much-deserved tribute after he had been invited to take in the Liverpool game in person. However, the two-time Magpies' boss isn't expected to attend this week's Premier League showdown.

“Over the next few weeks we’re going to be doing two huge displays. Most fans will now be aware that one of those displays will be paying tribute to Kevin Keegan," a Wor Flags spokesperson told Chronicle Live last week.

"We’ve wanted to do a tribute to Keegan for a long time now and it’s important to be able to put on a display fitting of the man and the importance of his individual role in the existence of Newcastle United as we know it today. Our fans absolutely adore him and with very good reason. Without his efforts as both a player and manager it’s not worth imagining the position the club would’ve been in so it’s important we acknowledge that as a fan base.

"The nature of our displays being entirely funded by supporters also makes this just that bit more special and authentic. With that in mind we would be hugely appreciative of any donations by supporters to help us continue our work commemorating those associated with our club last and present."
