While Newcastle United were consistently linked with a series of right-sided forwards in the summer transfer window, they ended up keeping their same attacking options for the start of this season.

After initial interest in Michael Olise was thwarted by Bayern Munich's move for the then Crystal Palace star, the Magpies were linked with the likes of Anthony Elanga, Pedro Neto and Federico Chiesa. as the summer progressed.

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo was another reportedly on United's watchlist, and the Cameroon forward has continued to impress for Thomas Frank's side this season. The 25-year-old has eight goals in 10 Premier League appearances so far this term, prompting more speculation of a big-money offer in the January transfer window.

Newcastle are thought to have funds available in the winter trading period, should Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell decide the time is right to strengthen the squad, and former United goal hero Andy Cole has backed Mbeumo to make the step up should he leave the Gtech Community Stadium.

“He’s a player that’s already stepped up from the Championship to the Premier League with Brentford and he doesn’t look out of place," Cole told Betfred.

"If he does have the opportunity to move to that next level, then he won’t let anybody down. He’s a handful. He’s strong, quick, aggressive, scores goals and creates chances, so what more can you ask for? He’s going to do just that.”

Howe has varied his attacking formation throughout the season, with Anthony Gordon often played on the right, away from his favoured left side. While Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy have all had opportunities, the 1-0 win over Arsenal featured Joelinton on the left flank, with Gordon on the right.
