The Newcastle United training ground moment which could be season's turning point

Eddie Howe admits he noted a significant shift in mood at Newcastle United's training ground last week.

The Toon head coach feels that the 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup eased tensions around Benton and ultimately set up an even more impressive win over Arsenal. Howe had gone five matches without a Premier League victory, enduring one of his worst runs as boss, but felt that his team were back to their best on Saturday.

He admitted after the game: "There was a better feeling in training after the Chelsea win, as if pressure lifted slightly. The Arsenal performance was built on hard, work , desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good.

"You have to be really strong mentality and know results will turn if you continue to do the right things. It has been a difficult week with the fixtures but the players have done really well."

Newcastle's win managed to pull them into the top half of the table but they must wait for the outcome for Fulham's clash with Brentford to see if they stay there. For now, the head coach is simply delighted that his side kept a massive clean sheet and picked up three points ahead of next weekend's trip to Nottingham Forest.

He said: "It was 95 minutes of concentration and consistency in our attitude. We managed and controlled some very good players pretty well today.

"It's three points but it means so much because we hadn't won for a while in the Premier League. I'm sure it will do us the world of good."
