Newcastle United return to action when they take on Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

WHERE IS THE GAME TAKING PLACE?

Having lost to Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge at the weekend, Newcastle have an immediate opportunity to reverse their fortunes against the Blues when they host them at St James’ Park in the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle’s recent home record against Chelsea is mixed, with the last six meetings between the two sides on Tyneside having resulted in three home victories and three wins for the away team.

Last season’s league meeting was a good day for the Magpies, with goals from Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon securing a 4-1 win for Newcastle.

The sides met in the League Cup last season, although that game was at Stamford Bridge and saw Chelsea triumph on penalties after the game finished 1-1.

Wednesday’s game kicks off at 7.45pm.

The home sections are sold out, and Chelsea have also sold their away allocation of 4,883 tickets, which is just over 1,600 more than they would have received for a league game.

Yes, Wednesday’s game has been selected for live television coverage by Sky Sports and is being broadcast on the Sky Sports + channel.

As the game is being broadcast live, there will be no domestic streaming available.

WHAT IS NEWCASTLE’S LIKELY LINE-UP?

Anthony Gordon missed Sunday’s league defeat at Stamford Bridge because of a groin injury sustained in training the previous day.

However, a scan has revealed that the problem is not serious, and the winger could return to the starting side for the League Cup encounter.

If Gordon starts, that will almost certainly mean Harvey Barnes dropping to the bench, and Eddie Howe might well decide to make other alterations. Jacob Murphy could return to the starting side in place of Miguel Almiron, while Sean Longstaff is also pushing for a recall at the heart of midfield.

Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Callum Wilson all remain unavailable because of long-term injury issues.

HOW ARE CHELSEA SHAPING UP?

Given that his side are combining their domestic duties with the UEFA Conference League, there is a good chance that Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will make a number of changes for Wednesday’s game.

The team that started last week’s Conference League win at Panathinaikos featured ten changes from the side that lined up against Newcastle in the league last weekend, and a number of players that featured in the European side could also be in Chelsea’s XI at St James’.

Filip Jorgensen is expected to replace Robert Sanchez, with the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Renato Veiga and Marc Cucurella in contention for a starting spot in defence.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could start in midfield, with Christopher Nkunku potentially replacing Nicolas Jackson in attack.
