Newcastle United's Alexander Isak wants to improve in one area - and succeeded vs Arsenal
Newcastle United's Alexander Isak admits he has been working on improving his heading ability after showcasing such talent at the Gallowgate End last time out. The Swede leapt highest to head the Magpies into an early 1-0 lead against Arsenal, with that effort proving enough to make it back to back wins for his side on home soil.
Isak has been a consistent goalscorer for Newcastle since his 2022 arrival but of his 39 goals in black and white, just three have been with scored with his head. In the aftermath of the Arsenal win, Eddie Howe admitted players like Lewis Hall had been doing double sessions and plenty of post-training analysis behind the scenes to raise their game - and it appears Newcastle's £63m man is being tasked with improving on the training pitch as well.
“We work on that,” Isak said of his headed effort over the weekend. “It’s not my strongest quality. It’s an element that I can develop. If I can get better at those things then it will only benefit myself.”

Isak's bullet header beyond David Raya will rank surely rank as one of his better finishes this term but credit must also go to Anthony Gordon for his inch-perfect cross from the right to set up the header. The winger, used again on the right rather than his favoured left flank, took the Gunners - and everyone inside St James' Park - by surprise with his first-time cross into the area to tee up his attacking co-star for the game's only goal.
“The cross was amazing, I just had to jump and put my head on the ball. So credit to him," Isak continued. "We have had a bad spell [of Premier League results] but hopefully this win can be a bit of an icebreaker for us.”
Isak now has 12 goals in his last 12 games at St James' Park - and three in his last three in the past week home and away - and is hoping to now kick on after a slow start to the campaign.
