Newcastle United's Marc Guehi transfer pursuit could be 'revived' thanks to pressure at Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace co-owner Steve Parish could be under pressure to 'revive' a potential deal that would see Newcastle United finally sign Marc Guehi from the South London club. The Magpies were keen to bring Guehi to Tyneside in the last transfer window but a price could not be agreed for the defender which left United failing to get their top target.
It was reported that Newcastle had bid at least £60m for Guehi but that was turned down by Parish - a move that some believe may not have pleased everyone at Palace.
Speaking on The Bird's Eye View via The Everything is Black and White Podcast, the Daily Mirror's Simon Bird shared his theory that there may be pressure on Parish for turning down United's bid, and given Palace's start to this season - they've won just once and sit 18th in the table - there could be a chance for a quick deal to be done.

"Newcastle knew who they wanted in the summer and it was Marc Guehi," Bird said. "Guehi would have come to Newcastle and presumably the personal terms were all arranged but Crystal Palace turned the deal down.
"Steve Parish lost his club £60m - he could have banked £60-odd million for Crystal Palace and the shareholders but the fact is he didn't. When you turn down a massive deal out of belligerence and trying to be too clever, I don't think it goes down too well with other shareholders.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Parish is under pressure to revive that deal and get the money for Guehi through the door. Palace haven't had a great start to the season, neither has Guehi - it might well be that there's some unsettlement there, and the player needs a fresh start.
"It's a deal that could potentially happen early [in January] because there's been so much background work done on it."
There was a belief that Guehi would be persuaded to sign a new deal at Palace following Newcastle's interest in him but as of yet no new deal has been agreed - which plays into the hands of United. The defender's contract at Selhurst Park expires in the summer of 2026 which leaves the January window as potentially Palace's last chance to get a real chunk of money for the 24-year-old.
While Guehi's domestic season has been below par, he has continued to impress for England - playing alongside Toon defenders Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento in Sunday's 5-0 win over Ireland. But with Sven Botman set to return for Newcastle in the New Year and Dan Burn impressing in his absence, there have been some questions over whether United will go back in for Guehi.
"I'm sure they'll be revisiting it," Bird says. "Transfer decisions are not done on a whim. You don't watch Marc Guehi for 10 games this season and now say 'he's no good, we don't want him.'
"He's in the system, they've scouted him, they know what he is about - he's an unbelievable character. He's an Eddie Howe and Newcastle squad character, he's humble, eloquent and he's serious about his job. He ticks all the boxes for Newcastle as a centre-half for the next five years.
"If the deal is there to be done, you go and do it but I don't think Palace will got that low [to £40m] - he is getting devalued [because of his contract] but I think you'll probably have to put £50m on the table for him."
