Celtic should demand a club-record fee for Nicolas Kuhn if the winger leaves Glasgow in January, reckons a former Parkhead hero.

Johan Mjallby made the comments as reports continue to swirl about the German winger, after another fine goal against Killie in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday as his side won to go back to the top of the table. He has already bagged double-digit goals and assists, with 10 strikes and 11 assists, and his performance against RB Leipzig in the Champions League has been his standout appearance so far this season.

It’s unlikely that Brendan Rodgers would allow him to leave in just a couple of months, but the speculation is only ramping up with Premier League sides, namely Fulham and Brentford, supposedly making inroads already to scope out his potential availability. Kuhn arrived for £3 million from Rapid Vienna in early 2023 and given that his contract currently runs until 2029, it would indeed take a sizeable fee to pry him away from Glasgow.

With Matt O’Riley’s recent departure to Brighton reaching the £30m benchmark, ex-Celtic player and assistant manager Mjallby reckons a fee in excess of that would be required — but not until the end of the season.

Mjallby told The Scottish Football Social Club: “I’m pretty sure they will do everything to keep him. He is on fire and in a way he is like a new signing this summer. For the first six months it was stop-start for him, he had this tooth problem and didn’t really show what he is all about. But he is perfect for the way Brendan Rodgers wants his team to play as well.

"It’s not going to happen. Maybe if they come in with a ridiculous bid - we are talking about Matt O’Riley figures - but if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen next summer.”
