Former Rangers goal hero Nikica Jelavic is reportedly being lined up for his first senior managerial role with struggling Croatian side NK Lokomotiva Zagreb.

A torrid run of form of just two wins in their last 10 matches has seen Lokosi slump to the bottom of the Croat top tier, two points adrift of safety. Current boss Silvijo Cabraja is the league's longest-serving manager having taken over in June 2021, but admitted after last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Osijek that he is fearful of the sack. And according to reports in Croatia, Lokomotiva's U19's head coach Jelavic is the leading candidate to succeed Cabraja if they decide to pull the trigger.

The 39-year-old - who won a league and cup double at Ibrox and scored 36 goals in 56 matches for the Gers, including the winner in the 2011 League Cup final against Celtic - is flying high with Lokosi''s youth team, and won the Croatian youth cup last year. Jelavic - who also played for clubs including Everton, West Ham and Guizhou F.C. in China - has also led his side to the last 32 of the UEFA Youth Champions League, but he may be elevated to the club's first team manager before the draw for the next round in Nyon on December 20.

The ex striker hung up his boots in 2021 after a brief spell with Lokomotiva before accepting a role in the yout set up. Jelavic won 36 caps for Croatia between 2009 and 2014, scoring six goals and representing his country at the European Championships in 2014 and the World Cup in Brazil two-years later.
