Nottingham Forest fell to only their second Premier League defeat of the season as they lost 3-1 at home to Newcastle United.

The Reds went into the game looking to sign off for the international break on a real high. After a hat-trick of wins, they had the opportunity to make it four in a row in the Premier League for the first time since 1995.

It took the hosts a little while to get going as Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon both had early sights of goal for the visitors. But it was Forest who made the breakthrough with 21 minutes gone. Anthony Elanga delivered a tasty free-kick and Murillo was well placed to head home for his first goal for the club.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side needed two big saves from Matz Sels to ensure they were in front at the break, though. The Belgian expertly denied Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

Nicolas Dominguez was thwarted just after the break and the Reds were left to rue not having made it 2-0. A goal had been coming for the Magpies, and it duly arrived when Alexander Isak pounced from a corner in the 54th minute.

Newcastle then completed the turnaround when Guimaraes curled the ball past Sels to make it 2-1 with less than 20 minutes to go, before Harvey Barnes added a third late on. Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at the City Ground.

Matz Sels: Made two excellent saves before the break to keep the scoreline at 1-0. Newcastle’s goals had been coming, though, and Forest just couldn’t stop them. Rating: 6/10

Ola Aina: Had his work cut out as Newcastle looked to get down his flank a fair bit. Back four came under a lot of pressure all afternoon, and eventually it told. Rating: 5.5/10

Nikola Milenkovic: A disappointing way for the Reds to fall to their second league defeat of the season. Helped them hold out for a while, but always looked a big ask to keep that going. Rating: 5.5/10

Murillo: That first Forest goal had certainly been coming - even if everyone thought it would be a 40-yard screamer when it did. Instead, it was a delightful header. Almost had a second late on. Rating: 6/10

Alex Moreno: Set the tone early on with a couple of important clearances. Close to having an impact at the other end of the pitch, too, when he wasn’t far off turning the ball in to make it 2-2. Rating: 6/10

Ryan Yates: Got under Newcastle’s skin from the off but was a bit lucky that it wasn’t until the 65th minute Anthony Taylor got his yellow card out. Could have had a booking before that. Rating: 6/10

Nicolas Dominguez: Second-half charge up the pitch which ended with his shot being saved was typical of the Argentine’s work-rate and engine. If only it had gone in. Rating: 6/10

Anthony Elanga: Terrific free-kick delivery for Murillo’s opener. Needs to find some consistency, though, as decision-making then let him down a few times. Rating: 6/10

Morgan Gibbs-White: Wasn’t able to have the impact he would have liked as he prepares to link up with the Three Lions. A few sloppy moments on a frustrating afternoon. Rating: 5.5/10

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Fortunate that a couple of careless mistakes were not punished by the visitors in the first half. Not quite at his usual standard as the hosts found it tough going. Rating: 5.5/10

Chris Wood: Forest’s first ever Premier League Player of the Month after a red-hot October but little chance of adding to his goal tally against his former club. Barely had a sniff. Rating: 6/10

Subs

Jota Silva (for Hudson-Odoi, 59mins): Made a difference when he came on by showing a willingness to run at Newcastle. Did his best to try to create something. Rating: 6/10

Elliot Anderson (for Gibbs-White, 59mins): Would no doubt have hoped to have made the starting XI against his former club. Couldn’t make the impact he would have liked when he came on, though. Rating: 5.5/10

Ramon Sosa (for Dominguez, 74mins): Didn’t really get into the game during his time on the pitch. An off-day all round for the Reds. Rating: 6/10

Taiwo Awoniyi (for Elanga, 88mins): Game was already over by the time he came on. Didn’t really have an opportunity to make his cameo appearance count. Rating: 6/10

James Ward-Prowse (for Moreno, 88mins): Perhaps could have come on earlier to help the Reds get some control on proceedings. Not much he could do by the time he entered the fray. Rating: 6/10

Subs not used: Miguel, Morato, Williams, Boly.
