Nottingham Forest’s recent success in the transfer market is paying dividends on the pitch - and a new study has backed this up.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have made a strong start to the season and sit fifth in the Premier League table with 11 games gone. They have 19 points to their name, level with Chelsea, Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Reds are reaping the rewards of some considered and sensible business done in the summer. The likes of Nikola Milenkovic, Elliot Anderson and Alex Moreno have made positive early impressions since their moves to the City Ground. And players already at the club, such as Murillo, Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi, have continued to catch the eye.

According to Transfermarkt, Forest are making the most of the money they have spent to piece Nuno’s squad together. The Reds are said to have one of the best ratios for total transfer fees paid per league point in the division.

Transfermarkt have added up the total cost of each top flight club’s entire active squad and divided that by their points won so far this term. At €16.7 million (£13.8m) paid out per point earned, Forest have spent the third-lowest amount pro rata.

Fulham have spent the least on transfer fees per point with €13.6m (£11.3m) splashed out, while Brentford are second on €16.6m - marginally less than the Reds. Transfermarkt argue the trio are showing “financial efficiency and success” this term.

Southampton are bottom of the table with €63m (£52m). This indicates that their “investments have not translated into effective performance”.

Forest have spent well in recent windows. Murillo came in from Corinthians for an initial £11m and central defensive partner Milenkovic cost just £12m from Fiorentina. An initial £3m was spent to snap up Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea and the £25m splashed out on Gibbs-White has long since proved to be a bargain. Transfermarkt estimate a total of roughly £262.2m has been spent by the club - and that investment is paying off.
