Nuno outlines Nottingham Forest 'pride' as key area for improvement pinpointed after defeat
Nuno Espirito Santo's sense of pride in Nottingham Forest's start to the season has not been diminished by Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United.
It was an off day for the Reds at the City Ground as they fell to their second Premier League loss of the campaign. Goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes saw the Magpies come from behind to earn three points after Murillo had opened the scoring for the hosts.
Before the match, Nuno had emphasised that his team still had plenty of room for improvement despite sitting third in the table at the time. A below par performance against Newcastle only underlined his point.
Nevertheless, as they head into the international break Forest can still reflect on many positives from their first 11 league games. Below, we look at what head coach Nuno had to say after the final whistle.
On lessons to learn...
“I wouldn’t say it was frustrating. OK, we lost the game but when you lose and when you win there is always a lesson to learn. Today we must learn an important lesson.
“It is easy to see we’ve been punished by the way that we’ve been punishing other teams. That’s a reflection to be made on the game.
“I cannot say it’s a bad performance, honestly. We have to give credit to Newcastle because they are a good team and they were able to control us. They were able to take advantage of some decisions we made when we were rushing our decisions, and they punished us on the counterattack. They have pace and they have quality, and they were lethal with the chances they had."
On room for improvement...
“It is exactly that. I always believe every game gives you a chance to improve and a lesson to take.
“Today, I think our improvement should be on the momentum of our decisions. We rushed our decisions and were not able to keep the ball enough time to make Newcastle players drop.
“When you attack and you defend and the team is organised, you know they are going to come. It is something we have to address."
On Murillo scoring his first goal for the club...
“He has been trying hard to get the goal. I’m delighted for him, it is unfortunate it comes on a bad day for all of us.
“But we cannot take credit from the way Murillo has been doing. It’s not about the goals, it’s about the defensive unit.
“Now he goes to Brazil. We should be proud of all our players who are going to their national teams. Hopefully they return healthy and we regroup and go again."
On Forest's start to the season...
“Even though we lost the game today, I am very pleased. All of us at Forest should be proud of our players and the way we have been working together.
“The effort was there and the belief was there to give everything. We recognise that OK, let’s go again. I’ve been proud from day one of the way we’ve been working as a team."
On Newcastle this season...
“The table is not something I think about now. If I ignore our position, I ignore the positions of all the other teams.
“We knew they were a very good team and a tough team to play against. Eddie is a fantastic manager and they have very talented players who you cannot allow to have space and time."
