Nuno's solution to Nottingham Forest dilemma could be to wind the clock back against Arsenal
Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten away record will likely be put to the test when the Premier League resumes from the final international break of the year.
The Reds are yet to taste defeat on the road so far this season. They have picked up some big results at the likes of Liverpool, Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea.
In previous campaigns a run of fixtures such as the one Forest have coming up would have been enough for travelling supporters to break out into a cold sweat. Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United represent their next three away games - a tough sequence for anyone in the division.
Given the way they have performed on their travels, this Reds side are unlikely to approach such a challenge with any sense of fear. But they will be under no illusions about just how tricky those matches will be.
First up is a trip to the Emirates on Saturday (3pm kick-off). And for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, the clash with the Gunners presents an interesting dilemma.
Forest have done well in recent weeks through sticking to a similar formula and a relatively settled line-up. But it might be that in the capital, Nuno looks to wind the clock back.
When they took on Liverpool at Anfield in September, the visitors’ strategy was to keep it tight for an hour before introducing attacking substitutions to cause problems at the top end of the pitch. It worked a treat. Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi combined from off the bench and the latter netted what proved to be the winner.
Nuno must weigh up whether to go down a similar path against Arsenal or set up his team to be a bit more attacking from the off this time around. There is certainly an argument for going with the former.
Against Liverpool, the Reds started with Ryan Yates and James Ward-Prowse in midfield while Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez took up the wide positions either side of Morgan Gibbs-White in attack. Dominguez and Yates have been superb as a midfield partnership of late, but such a reshuffle might allow for Forest being even more compact against tough opponents.
Wingers Hudson-Odoi and Elanga are capable of giving any team a hard time, but it may be that some of the attacking spirit is sacrificed - at least to begin with - this weekend. Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa are doing their best to fight for the wide spots, too, but experience might have the edge on this occasion.
The Reds do have a question mark over the fitness of Ola Aina after he returned to the UK early from international duty. Nigeria have said that decision was pre-arranged with the club, but it seems the full-back did also pick up a knock while playing for his country.
If Aina isn’t available, Neco Williams would slot into the right-back spot. The Welshman has done well from off the bench but Nuno will hope he doesn’t have to disrupt a back line with the second-best defensive record in the league.
Predicted Forest XI: Sels; Aina, Milenkovic, Murillo, Moreno; Yates, Ward-Prowse; Anderson, Gibbs-White, Dominguez; Wood.
