Olympics soccer schedule: Everything to know about the matches at Paris Games

Soccer will be one of the top draws at the 2024 Olympic Games, with the men's and women's tournaments being played at venues spread across France. Games will run from two days before the Opening Ceremonies all the way through August 10, a day before the Paris Olympiad comes to a close.

The group stage will begin on July 24, when the men's tournament begins. The women's tournament kicks off one day later, with both following a similar round-robin start before moving on to win-or-go-home knockout play.

There are differences between the men's and women's events. The men's event largely requires teams to pick rosters from players under the age of 23, with each team allowed to bring a maximum of three overage players. The women's tournament, meanwhile, features fewer teams (12, as compared to 16 for the men) but will include full-strength rosters.

Here is everything to know about the soccer tournament at the 2024 Olympics.

Olympic format and medal rounds

Soccer at the Olympics will follow more or less the same format for the men's and women's tournaments, with a group stage followed by knockout play building towards the medal rounds.

In the men's tournament, 16 nations have been divided into four groups of four. The four groups will operate on a round-robin basis, with each team playing the other three teams in its group once. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.

The winners at that stage move onto the semifinals, where the two victorious teams will play in the gold medal match in Paris on August 9. The losers in the semifinals will still have a shot at a medal, with the bronze medal game coming a day earlier in Nantes.

In the women's tournament, the difference comes in the group stage, where there are only three groups of four. The top two finishers will all go through, along with the two best third-placed teams based on points.

The knockout stages operate with the same format as the men's, with the gold medal game set for August 10 in Paris. The bronze medal match will be played on August 9 near Lyon.
