One of the Buffalo Bills' NFL Draft Picks Has Never Played Football

“His measurables are – wow – off the page,” Bills General Manager Brandon Beane said.

General managers are always looking for unique players at the NFL draft to give their teams the edge, and the Buffalo Bills may have found theirs in Travis Clayton — despite the fact that he's never played a single snap of football.

On Saturday, April 27, Clayton, from Bassingstoke, England, was the 221st NFL draft pick and is one of 16 players in this year’s International Player Pathway program‚ an NFL program which allows international athletes the opportunity to try to enter the league, according to CNN.

While Clayton found success as a professional rugby player, he's never played a single game of football, a fact that didn't bother Bills General Manager Brandon Beane.

Beane is confident that Clayton’s raw skills and imposing stature makes him an asset to the team. “His measurables are — wow — off the page,” Beane said of Clayton, highlighting his 6-ft.-7-in. frame and ability to run the 40-yard dash in 4.79 seconds, per CNN.

Speaking about the big transition between sports, Clayton said his rugby skills easily translate to the football field.

“With rugby also being a team sport, I believe that helps tremendously, my team knowledge and what it takes to communicate properly here and in the future, hopefully in the NFL,” he said in a statement on the Bills’ website. “More importantly, playing the wing in rugby helps with the physicality side and with agility and things like that will help.”

Clayton also expressed his gratitude to be chosen for the IPP program.

"To be in this program means everything to me," he said. "…I've been involved in many sports in the past and I feel like this is my last opportunity to show everyone what I've got and use all the skills from all the sports in the IPP program."

Clayton will be an offensive lineman seeking to make the Bills' official squad when practices start up this summer.
