Paul Fletcher takes top honours in Parbold
A trip out to Hall Lane Fisheries at Parbold on Sunday saw the Alliance and Leicester Angling Club once again enjoy a day’s fishing out together, although it did prove a little tougher than expected.
Hall Lane is a noted prolific fishery set within an idyllic setting that on its own can make a visit more than worthwhile for many visitors. But, given the field of 16 members on this one, all expecting a prolific day’s fishing given a previous successful visit, the high pressure and conditions on the day made the going very difficult overall.
Paul Fletcher took the day’s top honours and the valued club points as he took a creditable 31.4.1. That catch was made up of carp taken on the pellet and was followed by second-placed Dave Langton’s 28.10.0.

Already getting tight at the top of the leader board for the club championship, Colin Pellow, an angler who has been in top form again this year, was more than happy to round the frame off in third place with his 25.7.0 giving him some crucial points on this year’s challenge.
Still on the club scene, Maghull and Lydiate’s season come to an end with a final trip to Firswood Fishery in Lathom. Another prolific and much-favoured water, Firswood offers anglers looking for huge catches a tremendous opportunity here on a venue that has easy access and pools that are stacked with fish of all sizes.
However, again with the conditions not so favourable given the high pressure, weights were down considerably on the day and just 53.11.0 was enough for Maghull’s Tom Clays (BAS) to take the top honours in this one. Paul McKevitt, with his 35.14.0, and Neil Turner 28.1.0 took the respective second and third places.
Maghull and Lydiate will be holding their annual general meeting at St Gregory’s Parish Hall on Monday, November 18 at 7.30pm. Over at Mescar Fisheries at Down Holland, Mistral Lake is still a venue that is very much in fine form.
Sunday’s open saw St Helens Tackle and Baits’ Lee Clancy take the winning weight with carp to 8lb all taken on the pole at 8m and 13m with pellet for 80.8.0. Complex owner Andy Molyneux took a creditable 44.8.0 having opted for a maggot approach and that weight only narrowly beat the 44.2.0 taken by Vine Baits Jay Cloney who followed suit with the maggot.
Up the East Lancashire Road at Carr Mill Dam, match anglers have seen most of the winning weights taken on the pole of late. Noted as a ‘tip’ water by many given the historical background that has seen this fantastic venue noted as one of the best natural venues in the country, the Dam, even on its finest day, is more than always capable of throwing up a great pole weight.
One man who is certainly in form having notably taken many honours recently is Pete Tickle. As a local St Helens man, Tickle is no stranger to reading the moods of the grand old lady and as he did on Sunday taking a match win with 14.9.0.
On Monday, another local in Danny Sixsmith taking the honours with a weight of 11.4.0. Tickle was there again with a close 10.9.0 for second place.
St Helens AA will hold their AGM on Thursday, November 7 at 7.30pm at Blackbrook Rugby Club.
