Paul Warne reveals his 'utopia' regret after Jerry Yates' stunner for Derby County
Paul Warne was particularly surprised by the manner in which Jerry Yates opened the scoring for Derby County in their 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle at Pride Park on Saturday - but he did admit that it was a pity that the striker's stunning overhead kick wasn't worthy of all three points.
Summer recruit Yates followed up his strike in the win over Coventry City in the week leading up to the Plymouth clash with another strike against the Pilgrims, after just eight minutes. When a corner wasn't sufficiently cleared, the Swansea City loanee adjusted his body and struck a clean bicycle kick beyond visiting goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw.
On an afternoon in which the Rams welcomed Wayne Rooney back to the club, Plymouth replied before half time when captain Adam Randell's free kick took a hefty deflection and wrong footed Jacob Widell Zetterström. The points were shared, but Yates' goal will remain memorable - Warne believed it only a shame that it didn't earn his side a victory.

Indeed the Derby boss, who has guided the club to mid-table at the checkpoint of the final international break of the year, has been pleased with Yates' finishing in the previous week and hopes that purple patch can continue on the other side of this break.
"You'd be surprised to learn that I haven't managed that many players who can pull off overhead kicks that good," he quipped. "I've coached Nels [Curtis Nelson] for over a year now and his overhead kick was honking. In comparison, Jerry's was very good. I used to be a striker and used to think if you win 1-0 and you score an overhead kick, that is like utopia.
"That's your phone is on fire, oh my god I've seen your goal. If it's 3-0, and you score an overhead kick, it is kind of in the passage of insignificance, but 1-0...and in fairness he nearly scored from about 50 yards and I thought that had a right chance.
"Jerry hasn't been low on confidence or at a low ebb. He hasn't turned up to training with diamond shoes on either. He's just the same kid. He's having himself massively, he's been having himself ever since I've known him, since he was about 15! He always backs himself to score. He hasn't missed loads of chances, his technique is really good.
"As a striker you want to score goals and I think you want to score home goals - that's where your fanbase see you play. If you didn't go to Coventry in the week, you're relying on media or other people to tell you how they've played, whereas you want to be at your best at home. I'm really pleased for him.
"I'm as disappointed for the fans, because if we'd won that 2-1 or 3-1, the place is rocking. It was sort of rocking at one all, then when the final whistle goes it's a bit damp squib. I just hope people didn't leave the ground thinking '1-1, that wasn't very good'. The performance was outstanding, I thought, and I'd tell you if I thought it was poor.
"I thought we were really good and we competed with a good Championship team. I said to the lads that they've got the same points as Hull, so don't underestimate Plymouth. They haven't won away from home - but neither had we until three days before the game. It didn't mean our performances weren't very good."
