Philippe Clement suffered the wrath of Rangers fans after Connor Barron was subbed off against Hearts.

Boos rang out around the stadium as a large number of supporters vented their fury at the decision to take the popular midfielder off during tonight's clash at Ibrox. With the Light Blues holding a precious 1-0 lead over the Jambos, Barron was replaced by Dujon Sterling on 68 minutes. And the surprise decision did not go down well with the home crowd as Barron's departure was met by loud jeers.

Skipper James Tavernier was also hooked for Neraysho Kasanwirjo but it was when Barron's name was read out that fans voiced their frustrations. Reacting live to the substitution, Premier Sports commentator Rory Hamilton said: "Well, you can hear the reaction.

"I think this is down to the fact that fans do not like that Philippe Clement is taking off Connor Barron. He's being replaced by Dujon Sterling. The other change is that right-back captain James Tavernier is heading off and Neraysho Kasanwirjo will come on for him."

Michael Stewart also questioned Barron's number going up, insisting Mohamed Diomande should have been withdrawn instead. The pundit said: "The one that's more surprising is that Connor Barron is being taken off. I do wonder... we've heard a lot about the sports scientists and I do wonder whether it's just the load and looking to take him off. I'm looking more at Diomande and thinking he's not really been involved as much in the make up of the game."

Commentator Hamilton pointed out that Barron wasn't utilised anywhere near as much at Aberdeen, where he became a bit-part player as his contract ticked down. He added: "You have to say, at no stage of his career up until now, Connor Barron will have played as much football as he has so far in his Rangers career.

"He wasn't a mainstay of the Aberdeen side, particularly when his contract was running out. He dropped out of the team when as a club, they were playing Thursday to Sunday. But now, he's one of the first names on the team sheet for Rangers."
