Philippe Clement sends inspirational Rangers message as he rips up old playbook and responds to Tottenham deniers
Philippe Clement has challenged his Rangers side to stun Spurs and leave the Ibrox faithful with memories to last a lifetime.
Gers’ Belgian boss knows his side will be the underdogs in Thursday's Europa League showdown with Ange Postecoglou’s Premier League big guns. But he is adamant the huge financial gulf that exists between the teams should not count his side out of this Battle of Britain clash as he claimed his previous playbook was not reflective of what he really thinks about the cash chasm.
The Ibrox gaffer was speaking from experience when he insisted there is no reason why his team can’t create a major upset having already taken major scalps as both a player and a boss. Asked if his side were capable of a result that they could speak about for the rest of their lives, he said: “Yeah, I'm convinced that's possible, yes.

“Everything can be bridged in one night. I am getting old but I had it before as a player, and as a manager. I had the luck and also the hard work on several of those nights when the gap was amazingly big And those are also the best nights.
"It's not, like I said, and maybe some people took my words a little bit wrong, after the Ross County game, it's not only about money. It's also about work and what players do together. Otherwise, it would be easy and every team that has more money, they win every time. That's not the case, but the others need to work more. And that's what we need to do tomorrow evening.
“If you then perform and you get the results, those are also the nights that you remember all of your life. Those are also the moments that, as a player, you remember with your teammates really well.
“The moments of success, the moments of doing something special. So in that way, I hope the players can give themselves and as a team a special night tomorrow. With my own memories, I don't want to look too old, because you're going to look up how long it was ago. But for example, with Bruges winning in the Champions League in AC Milan 0-1.
“That was the team that the year before won the Champions League with Dida, Cafu, Costacurta, Maldini, Seedoff, Shevchenko, Inzaghi, and a few really good guys on the bench also. So that was a really special evening.
“If we meet each other, and it doesn't happen so much, people still talk about that evening together. So I had a few of those. Rangers has also several of those in the history, and those are the special evenings. So it's a really nice stage for my players.
“If you speak about the past, going with Brugge to Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain and getting results there was also a huge difference. So no, I want this mentality that they fight from the first second until the last second to get the result and to believe in that also. And I believe also that this team has the quality to do that.”
The heavy strain that had been piling on Clement’s shoulders has eased lately, with his resurgent side hitting 14 goals in their last four games. Instead, it’s former Celtic gaffer Postecoglou who is now under pressure as he returns to Glasgow.
Sunday’s collapse against Chelsea the low point on a slump that has seen the Lilly Whites slide to 11th in the Premier League. But Clement is paying no attention to the crisis talk sweeping the North London outfit.
He said: “It's how you see things. A few weeks ago I saw them play against Man City [and win 4-0]. They were not in such a bad place at that moment.
“So it's Premier League, it's the highest level in the world in that way. And things are really close together, you can lose points there. It's still a really good team.”
Clement has edged himself away from the brink with rampant wins over Nice, Kilmarnock and Ross County. His team already have one fit in the play-off rounds having hit the 10 point qualifying target. But he dismissed suggestions the visit of Tottenham was a free hit for Gers.
"I want pressure,” said the Ibrox boss, who will be without the ineligible Ianis Hagi and Danilo. “I don't want no pressure, we’re just going to go outside and play a game and we will see if we're going to win or not.
“That's totally not what I want. No, I want that we put pressure on ourselves to win every game. Like I wanted before also with my other teams to do that.
“I want this mentality that they fight from the first second until the last second to get the result and to believe in that also. I believe also that this team has the quality to do that.
“And I'm happy also that the last couple of weeks that people start to see also more and more these qualities. This is going to be the next step for a few players. It will be the first time that they play at this level. So that's going to be the next interesting test.
“It's not an exam where they're going to die or not. It's not that, but it's going to be a really interesting test to see who makes another jump again. And that's what we need as a club, to make next jumps.”
