An attacking line-up that may have caught many by surprise was supported by every single Watford player to claim an excellent win.

That was the opinion of head coach Tom Cleverley who switched to a flat back four and fielded Giorgi Chakvetadze, Kwadwo Baah and Rocco Vata from the start for the first time this season.

The Hornets took the change of shape and personnel totally in their stride and fully earned their 2-1 win over a West Brom side which had arrived at Vicarage Road unbeaten in 12 games.

“The team selection was a courageous one but the players backed it up with an excellent performance,” said Cleverley.

“On paper, our team was very attacking and very young.

“We asked a couple of players to put in really big shifts, and I thought Baah and Vata were excellent out of possession.

“We know what those two bring to the team, but with them doing the responsible jobs they did today it meant that we could go to a back four.

“Rocco totally deserved his two goal involvements and I thought the team as a whole was excellent.”

Having eked out a draw at bottom side Hull in the week while fielding a more conservative starting XI, Cleverley switched things up to face a fellow promotion contender.

“We knew the test we’d be facing because they were 12 games unbeaten and Carlos Corberan is a top coach, so I am super happy with how my team played today,” said the Watford boss.

“It was a contrast to Hull in the week, because that was a game we thought we could control and edge, but then today I felt coming back home we really wanted to take the game to them.

“We had so many good pieces of play which led to dangerous moments around the box.

“Ok, maybe we didn’t test their keeper as much as we should have done but I thought they made good tactical fouls.

“They stopped Giorgi in full flow and seemed to rotate the man who fouled him very well, and that was frustrating for us.”
