Rangers fans launch Hotline uprising against Philippe Clement as boss clapback over Connor Barron row backfires
Philippe Clement told Rangers supporters they don’t know all the facts after Ibrox let rip at his decision to substitute Connor Barron against Hearts. The under-fire manager insisted Barron’s legs were tiring after three games in a week so he chose to replace him with Dujon Sterling.
But Light Blues fans on the Hotline reckons Clement’s argument doesn’t stack up. Willie Mercer, Dumfries, said: “The fact that Barron has played a lot of football recently is not in question, however his substitution on Sunday was baffling given that he was one of our better players amongst a woeful bunch. Will that 25 minute break really make a difference? Just as baffling was that Diomande, who has played almost as many minutes recently as Barron, was having a shocker and having no influence on the game but stayed on the park. Clement says the fans don't know everything, maybe so, but what we aren't is blind.”
Davy Matson emailed: “Fans wrong to boo? No they were not. If a highly paid player can’t play a full 90 minutes after playing for 90 minutes three days earlier he’s clearly not fit for purpose. Try working every day without a break for six days a week, not 90 minutes, but nine hours then tell me you’re tired.” Andrew Wilson, Glasgow, added: “Barron looked fine to me. He and Nico Raskin were the best of a bad bunch for Rangers. Barron is unlikely to get minutes for Scotland so he has a two-week period now to recover.”
Across Glasgow and Callum McGregor said Aberdeen’s Premiership form is inspiring Celtic to stay at the top of their game. And Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “Aberdeen and their fans need only look at the standard set by the champions in the last three games to see the level they will need to get to in the next few years to take the title from us. Our squad is packed with young valuable talent and the avalanche of cash we will earn from Europe this year will see us uncatchable for the next two decades, so they better get used to it.”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, has concerns over one top Bhoy though. He said: “I read Nicolas Kuhn say his ambition is to break into the Germany side but with the lack of competition in our league I fear that’s not going to happen. I’m convinced a £30 million bid will be on the table in January to move him down south.”
Over to Edinburgh and the Hibs board handed David Gray a vote of confidence on Monday. But is it to be dreaded? Neil Renton, Leith, said: “Well seeing panto season is approaching when Hibs release a statement saying they’re sticking by manager David Gray.
"To be honest this isn’t purely his fault. He’s inherited a mess of a squad from a club that doesn’t have a clue what it’s doing. The only saving grace is we’ve got the backside of the pantomime horse over at Tynecastle to keep us company at the bottom of the table.”
Meanwhile, the fall out from Celtic fans disrupting the minute’s silence at Rugby Park continues to fire the Hotline flames. Ian MacLeod, Bishopton, said: “So sad that these people disgrace the memory of the soldiers who brought us peace. Sadder still that the Celtic board sit back and accept this behaviour from their so called fans.”
Graeme Kelly got in touch from Queensland, Australia, to say he was a proud veteran and Celtic fan but added: “The best option is to ban all Celtic fans from the Remembrance weekend game. That way the decent fans may take action and stop the small bunch of idiots from embarrassing the rest of us.” But Benjamin Clarke, Balornock, added: “As a Celtic fan and poppy wearer I respect the fallen. But for the caller from Fraserburgh to bang on about points deduction then what about the other lot with some of their songs? If the shoe fits….”
