Rangers supremo 'doing a Gio' vs Celtic agitates a worried Ibrox insider – 'I find it really strange'
Derek Ferguson has aired his surprise over the "strange" call for incoming chief executive Patrick Stewart to not get down to work until after a monumental double header with Tottenham and Celtic.
The former Manchester United supremo's start date will come hours after a clash with their biggest rivals at Hampden and following a marquee match-up with Ange Postecoglou's side. Stewart was the hot name at the club's tetchy AGM last week, with Philippe Clement and temporary chairman John Gilligan extolling the virtues of a man viewed as a potential Ibrox game-changer.
But the call to push back his start date has left former Rangers star Ferguson smarting. And he reckons there are similarities from when new boss Gio van Bronckhorst was in the stands rather than the dugout for Rangers' chastening 3-1 League Cup semi final defeat against Hibs in 2021. And now Ferguson sees a similar scenario playing out.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I always find this strange, when the appointment is made and they don’t start for three or four weeks down the line. I think it happened with Giovanni van Bronckhorst as well. His first game he sat in the stands. I find it really strange. If you’ve been appointed by a football club, start there and then. It’s a really strange one.
“But we do look to have a guy with vast experience, good knowledge, good contacts. He’s already had a conversation with the manager and that’s important. He’s not there until the 16th but he’s at least spoken to the manager.
"It’s important because he needs to suss out the manager, find out if they’re going to be able to have a working relationship, and if he can see him being the guy to take Rangers forward. I like the appointment, but I’d have liked him to start the job a bit sooner.”
