Rangers vs Hearts ends in confusion as commentator admits 'I've never seen anything like that'
Rangers' narrow win over Hearts at Ibrox ended in bizarre circumstances as ref Matthew MacDermid delayed blowing the full-time whistle.
Cyriel Dessers' first-half goal was the difference between both teams as Gers cut the gap on Aberdeen and Celtic back to nine points. The Jambos did put in a spirited performance, with Kenneth Vargas spurning two huge chances, including hitting the post from a one vs one. It was a nervy ending for the Light Blues too as Neil Critchley's men pushed forward for an equaliser in the dying minutes.
Craig Gordon joined his teammates up in the opposite box for a corner in the final seconds and as Rangers scrambled clear, the ball fell to Blair Spittal who rattled an effort off Kieran Dowell at the edge of the box. That prompted a strange stoppage of play by MacDermid as players from both teams surrounded the whistler demanding answers.

After 30 seconds, MacDermid eventually blew the final whistle, copping an earful from veteran keeper Gordon who felt his side should've been awarded a spotkick for a handball. TV replays showed the effort was well outside the penalty box, though, but the way the game concluded left many people inside the stadium baffled, including Premier Sports' commentators.
Reacting live at the time, Rory Hamilton said: "Well, that is the full-time whistle. I have to say, I haven't seen anything like that at the conclusion of a football game. But, as Hearts continue the protests through Lawrence Shankland... you can see Craig Gordon's not happy at all either.
"Rangers have done enough to see the game out 1-0. The inquest continues for Lawrence Shankland, Frankie Kent and Craig Gordon has had his words as well. There's bemusement amongst the Hearts players. They are particularly frustrated."
Pundit Michael Stewart dismissed Hearts' penalty appeals but was left scratching his head at MacDermid's handling of the situation. He added: "To be honest, I think Dowell's arm is down at his body. But the referee has been as clear as mud as to what is actually going on there.
"And if it was full-time, why did he wait at least a minute or so and talking to the players about something that was immaterial because the game was over? Blow your whistle!"
