Don Cowie refused to point the finger of blame at Jack Hamilton for the Ross County keeper's calamitous mistake.

The Staggies were 1-0 down to Rangers but far from out of the contest when stand-in stopper Hamilton dallied on a pass-back, allowing Danilo to close him down before tapping home the killer second. But Cowie has vowed to stand by the 30-year-old, who was making his first league start of the season after replacing crocked No1 Ross Laidlaw.

The Dingwall boss said: "Well, he's disappointed in terms of the manner of the goal. I don't think that was the reason we lost the game. I think he played really well, apart from that one moment. And so we're not going to get too caught up in it.

"It's an error that could be from maybe the lack of game time he has had in the last five or six months, so he maybe just got caught out in terms of the tempo, maybe thought he had a bit more time than he did. It happens. And he showed really good character throughout the whole game, considering little football he has played."

County remain eighth in the Premiership but have the four teams beneath them closing in after a seventh defat of the campaign. Cowie said: "We conceded really early. It's important to try and keep yourself in the game for as long as possible. And I thought we had done that. But then we concede a really sloppy second goal, which makes it a real challenge at that time.

"Then at half-time, it was about, can we get an opportunity or a goal to get our momentum and make it difficult for Rangers. And we had a couple of little moments from a set play, Akil Wright probably should score. You need to take them moments. We didn't, and then it just meant that we didn't really manage to get any momentum, to put them under pressure."
