Real Madrid vs Chelsea LIVE!

The 2023-24 Women's Champions League group stage kicked off for Chelsea tonight as they travelled to Spain for a clash with Real Madrid. This was the first match the Blues have faced since Emma Hayes was confirmed as the next USA manager and there is hope she can depart with a "fairytale" farewell.

That requires Chelsea to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time ever having lost to Barcelona in both the 2021 final and last year's semi-finals. A run of four wins in a row, scoring 15 goals, set them up well for this tie in Madrid.

However the score finished 2-2 as Olga Carmona struck early via a hefty deflection and then late on after a controversial penalty was awarded to Madrid. In between, Chelsea were largely the better team and levelled via Niamh Charles before Sam Kerr's header. Charles then saw a goal disallowed for offside with the last kick of the game.

Real Madrid vs Chelsea highlights

  • GOAL! Carmona hits opener against run of play

  • GOAL! Charles heads deserved leveller

  • GOAL! Kerr heads home late one

  • GOAL! Carmona nets controversial penalty

Thanks for joining us!

22:12 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea were forced to settle for a point to open their Women's Champions League campaign after a 2-2 draw away to Real Madrid.

Missed chances and a controversial refereeing call were ultimately behind the result, the Blues' first after Emma Hayes season-ending move to the USA job was confirmed.

Olga Carmona struck an early deflected effort for Los Blancos before Niamh Charles and Sam Kerr turned the game deservedly in the Blues' favour - only for Jessie Fleming to be harshly pulled up for a late tackle to concede a penalty which Carmona buried late on.

GOA-NO! Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea | 90+5 mins

CHARLES FINISHES AT THE FAR POST... BUT THE FLAG IS UP!

It's actually for Kerr, who was definitely interfering in fairness. Right call.

Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea | 90+4 mins

21:51 , Marc Mayo

Great defending from Hernandez!

James spots Kerr with a beautiful ball over the top and, after a poor first touch, the Australian is shepherded away from what looked like a golden one-on-one chance.

21:38 , Marc Mayo

Who fancies a winner, then?

This crowd is right behind Los Blancos now...

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!!! Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea | Carmona, 79'

21:35 , Marc Mayo

It was Fleming who dived in - comfortably outside the area.

Not much contact but it was a clumsy challenge, probably worthy of a foul...

Carmona steps up.

SHE SCORES!

PENALTY! Real Madrid 1-2 Chelsea | 78 mins

21:34 , Marc Mayo

Still time for Madrid to get back into this but Chelsea remain on the front foot.

It's always hard for a side that's threatened so little to bite back after such a goal.

But Del Castillo wins the ball by the halfway line... it's a penalty!

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!! Real Madrid 1-2 Chelsea | Kerr, 74'

21:31 , Marc Mayo

KERR HEADS HOME!

No surprise whatsoever that Charles is behind this one... a superb cross from the left-back is met by a bullet header from Chelsea's star forward.

The Blues lead!

21:28 , Marc Mayo

Another Madrid change as Bruun departs for Feller up front.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 70 mins

Lazy smack over the bar from James after doing well with Kerr to win the ball in Real's half.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 66 mins

Only 55 minutes after their first, a looping Carmona cross is cleared as far as Del Castillo and Charles blocks her effort wide.

The home fans wake up for the corner, well cleared.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 63 mins

21:20 , Marc Mayo

Carmona the latest Real player to throw in a last-ditch block to deny Kaneryd's effort.

Kerr causes problems at the back post from Cuthbert's recycled ball in, but Madrid hold firm.

Half an hour to go and all to play for!

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 57 mins

21:14 , Marc Mayo

Zarnozo shrugged off the ball and Kaneryd gets into the box, but has to settle for a corner as her cross is poked behind.

This will be Chelsea's seventh, having conceded none.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 54 mins

21:11 , Marc Mayo

Really end to end game, this one now.

Fleming gets down the left to pick out Kirby, shot well blocked, before another swift move sees Real make a pair of last-ditch interceptions...

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 53 mins

21:09 , Marc Mayo

Caicedo and Lawrence were developing a good battle down the left flank of Madrid before a cross is dropped on the line by Berger - the Chelsea goalkeeper quickly snaffles it up though!

The players are back out and Chelsea get us going for the second half.

The only other Women's Champions League game on at the moment is also at half time.

In Amsterdam, Ajax lead PSG 2-0.

Lots of time left for Chelsea

20:56

With a point not a terrible result, Emma Hayes will probably want her Chelsea team to continue where they left off after getting the equaliser.

They've largely bossed possession and looked more threatening, just a couple more clinical touches required in the final third.

More needed from Real Madrid

20:53 , Marc Mayo

Aside from a deflected goal, the hosts haven't offered enough in attack to threaten a big win tonight.

Highlights: Niamh Charles goal gets Chelsea level

20:50 , Marc Mayo

A lovely cross and finish.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | Half-time!

CHANCE!

Nusken latches onto a bad header clear from the corner but she shoots right at the goalkeeper...

And that's the break.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 45+1 mins

20:46 , Marc Mayo

Cuthbert and Kirby like the look of this one, just to the right of the D.

It's the Scot... blocked wide! Corner with a single minute of time added on.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 45 mins

20:45 , Marc Mayo

Toletti late and booked for felling Kaneryd right on the 18-yard line. No doubt about that.

Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | 44 mins

20:44 , Marc Mayo

The Blues back on the front foot, can they complete a major turnaround before half-time?

GGGOOOAAALLLL!!! Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea | Charles, 41'

20:41 , Marc Mayo

SUPERB HEADER!

It's no surprise to see the England defender pop up with the goal, even if it's not her forte.

Lawrence swings in a lovely ball to the back post where Charles ran off her marker and guided a neat header into the far corner.

We're level!

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 40 mins

20:39 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

First a fine Kirby ball in almost swings onto the head of Fleming before Charles drills one in low, somehow Madrid clear in the goalmouth scramble.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 38 mins

20:38 , Marc Mayo

Not long left for Chelsea to grab what would be a confidence-boosting leveller before the break.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 35 mins

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Carmona wants a foul in the Chelsea half but no dice and Cuthbert scampers clear.

A superb ball in beats pretty much everyone, Kerr included, and it bobbles up for the keeper to collect.

Carmona has stayed down up the pitch, not too clear why though and she'll play on.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 32 mins

20:32 , Marc Mayo

Nusken the latest to direct an attempt at goal, which bounces off a Real body for a corner.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 29 mins

20:29 , Marc Mayo

Better from Real with Del Castillo holding off multiple tackles before Andres' ball to pick out Caicedo's run is just overhit.

Chelsea launch an attack to catch the hosts napping as Kirby spots Kerr in the box - shot saved well at the near post!

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 27 mins

20:26 , Marc Mayo

Smart ball by Lawrence into Kirby, who's operated well in the hole so far, but her pass into the box is cleared.

Chelsea's attack is then ended as Cuthbert fouls Bruun. Harsh one, that.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 25 mins

20:25 , Marc Mayo

Not seen much of Kerr tonight, Real's central defence doing a good job of being hot on any balls forward.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 21 mins

20:21 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Chelsea wander forward and so nearly find Kerr in the box, her weak flick then cleared before Kirby can tap home.

Charles and Fleming linking up really well to create that chance.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 20 mins

20:21 , Marc Mayo

Madrid have really raised their game to Chelsea's level since the goal, if not arguably having the better of the last ten minutes' play.

Emma Hayes is discussing with her staff what her side must do next.

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 17 mins

20:18 , Marc Mayo

Good bite to this game now as Charles pops up in attack with a chunky 50-50 which Cuthbert follows up, Chelsea finding their left-back in the box to win a corner.

The referee tells Carter to avoid getting too close to the goalkeeper as the ball whips in low... claimed by Rodriguez.

Highlights: Olga Carmona goal gets Real Madrid off mark

20:15 , Marc Mayo

This was the first shot of the game!

Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | 13 mins

20:13 , Marc Mayo

Big test for Chelsea now, who have largely been on top but need to maintain midfield control against a Madrid team growing in confidence.

GGGOOOAAALLL!!! Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea | Carmona, 10'

20:10 , Marc Mayo

CARMONA SCORES FROM RANGE!

Berger's clearance doesn't go far enough and Madrid come back at Chelsea in their first real attack of the game.

Carmona has a go and it pings in off Bright, leaving the keeper stranded!

Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea | 7 mins

20:07 , Marc Mayo

Chants of "come on Chelsea" from a pocket of away fans as goalkeeper Berger jinks around the on-rushing Bruun.

Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea | 4 mins

20:04 , Marc Mayo

Kaneryd gets the better of Carmona once again down Chelsea's right, that's looking like a good early battle.

No ball in the box this time, instead it's worked back to Kirby and the Blues hold onto it.

From back to front, Kirby is slotted in by a fine through ball but Carmona's slide tackle is pinpoint to stop her!

Real Madrid 0-0 Chelsea | 2 mins

20:02 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea on the front foot.

Kirby on the ball early looking wide right for Kaneryd, who does well to beat two markers before a dangerous Cuthbert cross... flashes across the face of goal and dealt with.

Emma Hayes addresses USA switch

19:27 , Marc Mayo

Emma Hayes says her decision to leave Chelsea “pulled on my heartstrings”, but that her dream job with the United States was an “opportunity I simply couldn’t turn down”.

The 47-year-old has been appointed US women’s manager and has become the highest-paid female coach in world football, on a £1.3million-a-year deal.

She will remain in charge of Chelsea until the end of the season and begins her final shot at Champions League glory when the Blues face Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday.

Hayes, who has won six titles and five FA Cups during 11 years at Chelsea, said: “Without question it pulled on my heartstrings, because I care so much for the players and everybody that I’ve built relationships with. But I’m all about challenge.

“We’ve won a lot at Chelsea and I’m very proud of that, and I’m proud of the fact that I can leave that club in a better place and one that I hope continues to compete. But, for me, the challenge of competing for World Cups, for Olympics, the dream of coaching a team I’ve always wanted to, I simply couldn’t turn it down.”

The Champions League has eluded Hayes at Chelsea and she says leading them to European glory in her final season would be a “fairytale”.
