Rod Stewart takes Rangers finances jab as Ally McCoist pleads for Celtic diehard to 'calm down' on air

Cheeky Sir Rod Stewart couldn't resist a jab at Ally McCoist over Rangers finances - as the Celtic diehard taunted that his side "spend their money wisely".

Brendan Rodgers' side are hoping to take a massive step towards the Champions League knockout rounds with another win in Europe's elite competition when Club Brugge arrive at Celtic Park on Wednesday night. The Hoops are on seven points and the win over RB Leipzig has got the Celtic fans believing of a deep run in the competition before the Belgian side arrive in Glasgow's east end.

Stewart joined McCoist, Gabby Agbonlahor and Alan Brazil on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show to discuss the Premiership leaders clash as he prepared to travel to the game - but and quickly got to work trolling the Rangers hero. After being introduced by Brazil on the phone, he quipped: "Let's not mention the Rangers this morning!"

McCoist took the bait responding: "Just you get on to your Champions League game and we will leave Rangers out of it for this moment in time. In all seriousness, I did say that performance against Leipzig at home was as good as I have seen in a long, long time."

The rocker gushed about the performance against the Bundesliga side: "Absolutely. Unlike when we beat Barcelona and Manchester United we were sort of hanging on. Against Leipzig we dominated all the way through - usually we are hanging on - a whole new way of playing for us. Let's hope we can do it again tonight."

Brazil chimed in: "I was just saying to Gabby, you'll do the (Aston) Villa game won't you?" Stewart wasn't having it adding: "I am looking forward to that one, but let's get over tonight first."

Agbonlahor added: "How exciting will it be for Celtic to finish in that top 24?" And Stewart quickly latched on to the chance to have another go at the Lighr Blues: "Let's be honest we are never going to win it, but it's all about the money and the prestige that goes with it. Of course with money we spend our money wisely, as apposed to the other team in Glasgow..."

McCoist: "Just calm down. Don't get carried away now. You've had a couple of good results, don't get carried away."

Laughing Stewart added: 'If the shoe was on the other foot you would be rubbing it in." McCoist confessed: 'You better believe I would be!"
