Roff teams begin playoffs on high note

Apr. 19—ROFF — The high school softball and baseball teams from Roff won district championships Tuesday at Tiger Field.

The 12th-ranked Lady Tigers blanked No. 20 Macomb 11-0 before rolling to 10-2 and 11-2 victories over Varnum to secure a Class A District championship.

Coach Eric Hardison's crew improved to 18-16 with the three playoff wins.

The sixth-ranked RHS baseball squad walloped Wapanucka by counts of 13-2 and 20-1 to win a Class B District title. Coach Derek Collins' club improved to 14-10 on the season.

SOFTBALL

Roff 11, Varnum 2

The game was knotted at 2-2 before Roff erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take control.

Shelby Ensey and Mallori Rogers both had three hits apiece to pace Roff at the plate. Ensey finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Rogers went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the tournament hosts.

Emma Hardison finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored and Brianna Bess went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Kailey Cranford and Payton Smith both cracked doubles in a 15-hit RHS offense.

Jenna Lofton finished 2-for-3 to lead Varnum and Hailey Mack went 1-for-2 with a double and scored a run for the Lady Whippets.

Roff 10, Varnum 2

The Lady Tigers led just 5-2 after three innings but scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to get some breathing room.

Brianna Bess, Emma Hardsion and Sophie Eldred all had three hits each in a 16-hit Roff barrage. Bess went 3-for-3 with two triples and two RBIs, Hardison ended up 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored and Eldred went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored for the home team.

Shelby Ensey finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored and Keela Scott went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Kailey Cranford finished 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Roff.

Roff 11, Macomb 0

The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and cruised to the four-inning victory.

Keela Scott, Shelby Ensey, Sophie Eldred and Emma Hardison all had two hits apiece in a 12-hit RHS offense.

Scott finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored from the top of the Roff lineup, Ensey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Eldred finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Hardison finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Brianna Bess cracked a triple and drove in three runs for the Lady Tigers and Mallori Rogers hit a double and drove in a run.

Macomb came up with just one hit in the contest.

BASEBALL

Roff 20, Wapanucka 1

The Tigers broke the game open with an 11-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning.

Trey Humphers, Oliver Gregory and Caden Graves paced a 16-hit RHS barrage with three hits each.

Humphers finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, three RBIS and three runs scored, Gregory went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and Graves finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored from the top of the Roff batting order. He also swiped four bases.

Cash Wainscott finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for the tournament hosts and Lane McCarter ended up 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Kaden Darnell finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored for the Tigers.

Wapanucka managed just two total hits — singles by Kase Smith and Judd Toney.

Humphers was the winning hurler for Roff. He struck out four, walked none and allowed just two hits and one earned run in four innings of work. Graves struck out four WHS hitters in the top of the fifth inning.

Roff 13, Wapanucka 2

Roff scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning to take control early.

Freshman Cash Wainscott produced three hits to pace Roff at the plate. He finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Oliver Gregory ended up 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for Roff and Caden Graves went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mason Dansby walked twice and scored two runs.

The Indians had three total hits — singles by Jayden Brooks, Noah Blue and Jaxon Martin.

Sophomore Jaxon Austin was the winning pitcher for Roff. He struck out five, walked one and allowed no earned runs in three innings, Lane McCarter tossed the final two frames for the Tigers. He struck out four, walked one and allowed two hits.
