Rory McIlroy pocketed a huge sum of prize money despite missing out at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday. The Northern Ireland man finished tied for third behind eventual champion Paul Waring and runner-up Tyrrell Hatton.

Englishman Waring finished on -24 at Yas Links, two shots clear of Hatton. McIlroy was a further shot behind in third following a late charge.

Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin also threw down a decent challenge but had to settle for the minor honours, and some decent prize money.

Waring pocketed a cool €1,419,772 for claiming the biggest win of his career, while McIlroy joined Matt Wallace and Thorbjorn Olesen on €432,613 for finishing tied for third.

His fellow Holywood man McKibbin finished in a tie for 10th place to earn €154,783, while Lowry claimed €120,541.

Lowry was out in the last group with Waring and made a dream start with birdies on his first three holes. A bogey on the par three fourth hole checked the Offaly's man momentum but birdies on his sixth and ninth saw them make the turn in 32 shots.

At the same time, Hollywood pair McIlroy and McKibbin were also making charges up the leaderboard. Despite opening his round with a bogey, McKibbin shot a 30 on his opening nine thanks to an eagle and five birdies.

Further birdies on the 10th and 11th holes had the 21-year-old within a couple of shots of Waring. But McKibbin could not sustain his momentum and had to settle for a two-under-par back nine that saw him sign for an eight-under-par 64.

McIlroy got the fast start he needed by four of his opening six holes, but an errant second shot saw him bogey the par five seventh hole. The 35-year-old drove the green on the 386-yard tenth hole to get back on track before making three consecutive birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Needing a strong finish, McIlroy saw a birdie putt slide by the edge on the 17th hole before he found the 18th hole in two shots for a closing birdie. McIlroy signed for a 64 to finish at 21-under-par and in a tie for third place, cementing his position at the top of the Race to Dubai rankings ahead of next week's season finale at the DP World Tour Championship, reports the Irish Mirror.

Lowry birdied the ninth, 10th and 12th holes to put pressure on Waring, who was chasing his second DP World Tour win and first in six years. But a poor driver on the 14th hole led to a bogey for Lowry as Waring continued to keep his composure out in front.

Looking like needing a birdie-eagle finish, Lowry hit an iron on the 17th hole straight at the pin only to see it catch the downslope and just roll off the green.

When Waring holed a 40-foot putt on the same hole to give himself a one-shot lead over Tyrell Hatton who posted the clubhouse target at 22-under-par, Lowry raced his putt at the hole and missed the one coming back for a bogey.
