Roy Keane tears into Samuel Barrott and VAR over '100% red card' in Liverpool vs Southampton
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane turned his ire on the officials as he declared that Southampton's Adam Lallana should have been sent off after an ugly challenge on Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch.
The Saints midfielder was booked for the late tackle, which left his opponent sprawled on the ground and wincing in pain in the 24th minute at St. Mary's. Replays showed that Lallana's boot appeared raised as he connected with the leg of Gravenberch just above the ankle.
However, referee Samuel Barrett determined that the foul did not warrant a red card - as the former Reds star escaped with only a yellow card. Subsequently substituted for Joe Aribo after picking up an apparent knock, this tackle turned out to be Lallana's most significant involvement in the action down on the South Coast.
However, the tackle did not pass Sky Sports pundit Keane by who confessed at half-time that he felt the ex-England man should have been dismissed. Criticizing the call to allow Lallana to remain on the field, he said: "He's not in control, he's not even looking at the ball! There at the right last second [he looks].
"Listen, I would have been sent off for it. I would have done! 100%. And there would have been no complaints," he continued. "They've definitely looked at the player and thought 'well he's not the nasty type', none of the Liverpool players were appealing for it, he's an ex-teammate... the more I look at it the worse it is. I think it's a red."
Lallana has played ten times for the Saints so far this term, having returned to the club where he first made his name over the course of the summer. Previous to this, the 36-year-old veteran enjoyed a spell at Brighton following on from a successful stint with Liverpool which saw him win the Champions League and Premier League.
Prior to his assertions at half-time, former Manchester United skipper Keane spoke positively about Liverpool's performances so far this season. Weighing up the Reds' title credentials before the Southampton clash, he said: "Liverpool will have been looking at that last night, the managers and the players, and they will have been so pleased with the goals Man City are giving up
"Yes, they're still not nice on the eye going forward but the intensity in terms of their defending, Liverpool will be delighted. But they still have to go out and do the business today. The beauty for Liverpool, whatever is going on at the moment, is they're not giving any goals away."
He added: "They've given up six goals all season, so they're rock solid at the back, they've got brilliant attacking players and of course the manager is not going to admit that but he'll be looking at where City is at the moment and say 'we've got to take full advantage of that'. That's why the pressure is back on them today - they have to beat Southampton, who are clearly struggling."
