Roy Keane warning about Manchester United players rings true yet again for Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim enrolled into a coaching internship under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United six years ago and was later branded as the "new Mourinho" by the man himself.

"There will never be a new Mourinho," he refuted. "Mourinho is one of a kind." The Fenerbahce coach believes Amorim is currently "the best manager in Portugal" and will hope his tenure runs more smoothly than his own.

The former Chelsea and FC Porto coach's time at United got off swimmingly with Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League successes in his first season. But his tenure is, maybe, most remembered for his "respect" press conference and unfiltered analysis.

From claiming Luke Shaw was overweight to terse comments to reporters, Mourinho always stole the headlines. Ahead of United's trip to Fenerbahce, Mourinho reckoned the club were "giving [Erik ten Hag] conditions to keep developing his job - that was a difference in relation to me."

Ten Hag was promptly sacked on the following Monday having mustered just three wins from this season's nine Premier League games. His stay also contained some drama, including fall-outs with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho as well as several chats with Marcus Rashford about his off-field activities.

Ten Hag was not solely blamed for United's dour form this year - which was lessened by May's FA Cup win. The mayhem brought by the ownership process which saw Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchase a minority stake was unhelpful, while players were also criticised for poor showings.

Back in 2018, upon Mourinho's sacking, Roy Keane underscored the fact that the manager is not solely to blame when things go south. "I do think the players, obviously, get away with murder," he said at the time.

Keane added: "Just the way they hide behind the manager, Mourinho. Whatever you say about the players, they have thrown him under the bus. People have said Mourinho has been falling out with players, well you would fall out with players.

"That's the name of the game, players turn up overweight or players are not training properly and not producing. And then for some of them to down tools, you know, shame on some of them players.

"I'm not Mourinho's biggest fan, don't get me wrong, but I just can't tolerate any footballers who just hide behind their agents, their pals in the media. A bit of a joke, really."

Supporters cannot be taken for fools and can easily clock when a player isn't pulling their weight or acting askew. Keane's comments are a reminder that, while Amorim may be a fresh start, the current squad is still responsible for what went before.
