Ruben Amorim makes Ruud van Nistelrooy decision as Manchester United confirm four departures

Ruud van Nistelrooy has left Manchester United at the end of his four-game spell as caretaker manager, with Ruben Amorim opting not to keep the club's former striker on his backroom team.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford in the summer as one of Erik ten Hag's assistants and was installed as interim boss two weeks ago, when Ten Hag was sacked after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

The 48-year-old guided the team to three wins and a draw during his short spell in charge, reconnecting with supporters and rebuilding confidence in the squad before Amorim's arrival. He had stressed a desire to remain at the club under Amorim, but was accepting of the possibility that the new appointment might rejig the coaching staff.

The Portuguese boss officially started work at United on Monday and arrived at Carrington early in the afternoon, with Van Nistelrooy told he would be leaving the club. His fellow assistant Rene Hake has also departed, as has goalkeeping coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar and analyst Pieter Morel.

A United statement said: "Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach. Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend.

"We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford. Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future."

Amorim travelled to Manchester with five members of his own staff. Coaches Carlos Fernandes, Adélio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and sports scientist Paulo Barreira.

United haven't confirmed the status of first-team coaches Andreas Georgson and Darren Fletcher, but it now looks like they might be staying in their roles.
