Ruben Amorim will be Manchester United's new head coach after his appointment was confirmed this week.

United opted to part ways with Erik ten Hag following the defeat to West Ham in the Premier League. Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken interim charge - and he oversaw the win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Just a few days later, United were confirming that Amorim would take charge at Old Trafford and depart Sporting CP in the process. Amorim will leave the Portuguese club after four years in charge, with the team currently top of the league table having won all 10 of their top-flight fixtures so far.

United will meet Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm) in a return to Premier League action. Van Nistelrooy will take charge of the game with inbound Amorim guiding Sporting to a 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora on Friday night, shortly after his impending move was announced.

With a new era set to dawn at United, The Manchester Evening News takes a closer look at all of the latest news, and information, upon Amorim's appointment as the club's new head coach.

When is Ruben Amorim's first game?

Amorim will formally take charge of United on November 11, which will come at the start of the final international break of the calendar year. As a result, Amorim faces a wait before his first game as United's head coach.

Amorim is expected to be on the touchline for the first time as United head coach on November 24, for the away trip to Ipswich Town at Portman Road. In the meantime, Van Nistelrooy will take interim charge of fixtures against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester City before November's international break.

Pep Guardiola verdict

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was asked about Amorim's appointment as United head coach. The City manager offered his congratulations to Amorim - who had even been tipped to replace him in the future - and he revealed that he will chat to the Portuguese in the coming days.

"Welcome to United and welcome to England," Guardiola told reporters. "I congratulate him, [we will speak] next Tuesday. I'm not the right person to give advice to colleagues. They have a lot of people at United who can share information about what is happening at United."

Speaking generally about the Premier League, Guardiola added: "Every manager has new ideas. Of course, it will improve myself. There are now more rivals. How many times face I faced Jurgen [Klopp], or now Mikel [Arteta] in the last few years.

"It's normal how much you face them, and they're fighting with you to be champions. I'm completely honest, as I learn a lot from other managers. The problems they create. It makes you better."

Ruben Amorim contract details

After Amorim fulfils his duties with Sporting, he will officially become the new United head coach. Amorim has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract to take charge of United that runs until the summer of 2027, but his deal featured the option of another 12 months, too.

The move comes after the 39-year-old spent more than four seasons in charge of Sporting CP, where he helped guide the club to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 - before winning that particular trophy last season, too.
