Manchester United have a new manager - Ruben Amorim.

The 39-year-old arrives from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon and he will succeed Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout after the Dutchman was sacked earlier this week.

United acted swiftly to get their man, with Amorim in place just days after chiefs decided to pull the trigger on ten Hag following a dismal start to the season.

United coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has been put in caretaker charge in the interim, with the former striker overseeing the 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

And he will remain in the dugout for the fixture against Chelsea today too after United confirmed when Amorim will take charge.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements,” a statement said earlier this week.

“He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday, 11 November.”

That means Amorim’s first game at the United helm will be an away trip to Ipswich Town on November 24, which will be followed by home games against Bodo/Glimt in Europe and Everton in the league.

Amorim is set to face Man City in the Champions League with Sporting on Tuesday night.
