Ruben Amorim's first Manchester United transfer window predicted with four arrivals and £124m spent
Ruben Amorim plays with a different style than Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, so the new manager may be tempted to make some additions to his squad in the upcoming January transfer window.
After Ruud van Nistelrooy's unbeaten stint as United's interim manager, the Dutchman has now taken charge of his final game, with Sporting Lisbon's Amorim ready to join up with the United squad ahead of his first game following the November international break. It was agreed at the beginning of the month that Amorim would become the new head coach following the sacking of Ten Hag, with his new side currently 13th in the Premier League table, but only four points off third place.
During his time with Sporting, Amorim became synonymous with his three-at-the-back setup, with his side playing fast, attacking football that utilises the wing backs fantastically. When the Portuguese manager arrives at Old Trafford, he's expected to line up in the same system, but with the January transfer window just around the corner, we could see the 39-year-old dip into the transfer market to make some suited addition for his system.
So, if Amorim was to get some backing in the January transfer window, who could he sign? We simulated the 2025 January transfer window to find out...

Man United's 2025 January transfer window simulated with Ruben Amorim
To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2024 editor to give Amorim full control in the 2025 January transfer window. This is what happened.
Incomings (£124.25m including add-ons)
Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt) - £58m
Nico Gonzalez (Porto) - £32m
Samuel Lino (Atletico Madrid) - £32m
Sverre Halseth Nypan (Rosenborg) - £4.8m (6.25m including add-ons)
The biggest arrival in the 2025 January transfer window was Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Egyptian striker joining for £58m while United also sent Joshua Zikrzee head the other way. Amorim looked to the Portuguese league for his next signing, with a new midfielder arriving in Nico Gonzalez from Porto, with the Spaniard costing £32m.
For the same price, Amorim looked to sign a new left wing-back to suit his three-at-the-back system, with Samuel Lino signing from Atletico Madrid. Lastly, 18-year-old Sverre Halseth Nypan arrived from Rosenborg for £4.8m, but he was sent back on loan to the Norwegian side for the remainder of the season.
Outgoings (£2.2k)
Antony (Ajax) - Six-month loan (£1.2m fee)
Joshua Zirkzee (Eintracht Frankfurt) - 18-month loan
Sverre Halseth Nypan (Rosenborg) - Six-month loan
Toby Collyer (Norwich City) - Six-month loan (200k fee)
Harry Amass (Sheffield United) - Six-month loan (150k fee)
Tyler Fredricson (Mansfield) - Six-month loan (2.2k fee)
Ethan Wheatley (Wrexham) - Six-month loan (100k fee)
Habeeb Ogunneye (Koln) - Six-month loan (55k fee)
Jack Moorhouse (Morecambe) - Six-month loan
Amorim's biggest departure in the January transfer window saw Zirkzee make a move to Frankfurt on loan, with the striker moving as part of the Omar Marmoush deal with an option to buy included. In his first month and a bit as United manager, the Dutchman failed to impress the new boss, leading to his departure.
Another one of Ten Hag's signings that failed to make a good first impression with Amorim was Antony. The Brazilian was sent on a six-month loan to Ajax, with the hope that the winger could regain some much-needed confidence away from Old Trafford. Elsewhere, a handful of youngsters were sent on six-month loans around Europe, with the majority staying in England.
The likes of Toby Collyer, Harry Amass, and Ethan Wheatley have been on the fringe of the squad during the beginning of the season, but Amorim saw no room for them this season, opting to give them game time elsewhere.
FM24 predicts that Amorim could use his first transfer window to sign a new left wing-back, two new midfielders, and a new striker, with Marmoush the most expensive arrival of the lot.
