Ruben Selles has recalled Frank Lampard’s tactical style from his time in charge at Everton in order to get a better idea of what to expect from Coventry City this weekend.

The newly-appointed Hull head coach was assistant to Ralph Hasenhüttl at Southampton back in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign when Saints played the Toffees twice, losing 2-1 at St Mary’s before reversing the scoreline with a win at Goodison Park.

Spaniard Selles went on to enjoy an impressive spell at troubled Reading where he has gained a growing reputation for his coaching, resulting in last week’s appointment by the Tigers. Clearly a student of the game, the 41-year-old has been drawing on his knowledge of Lampard in the dugout elsewhere, as well in his first few games in charge of the Sky Blues as both new bosses prepare to pit their wits against each other.

“I know the team. Mark (Robins) has been there for a long period, changing the culture of the club, promoting it, and making an impact on the Championship,” he said, speaking to our sister title Hull Live ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at the CBS Arena.

“They decided to change the manager, and they are now with Frank (Lampard). We faced Frank in the Premier League a couple of seasons ago with his Everton team.

“He’s a proper manager. The team is going to be ready. It’s going to be a little bit different than what they were before. We can expect not only the way that they played the last couple of games but also a little evolution because it’s still too early to determine completely their style.

“We think by knowing him from before, the footage, and the players that are available, we can have a couple of things to adapt our style to and be successful tomorrow.”
