Ruud van Nistelrooy explains why he's not worried by Manchester United's lack of goals

Ruud van Nistelrooy believes Manchester United's lack of goals is not a worry this season because they are continuing to create chances.

United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and needed a penalty to take the lead in the second half.

Chelsea responded to Fernandes breaking the deadlock just four minutes later through an excellent strike from Moises Caicedo, meaning the points were shared at Old Trafford.

Only Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals in the Premier League than United this season and finding the back of the net remains a problem for the team.

Van Nistelrooy was asked about United's wastefulness at his post-match press conference and said: "I think today was slightly disappointing because we didn’t score the second one with the opportunities that we had, that’s the feeling me personally and in the dressing room.

"In the last games we played, we lost points for not converting our chances. The way I think is we created a lot all through the season so far and in that sense, I'm not too worried. I think when the players get in the flow of it, with results coming and confidence growing, goals will come.

"It’s been very difficult, from last Monday to today, six days and a rollercoaster of emotions. Obviously very sad seeing Erik leave. The next day you have to start to focus on getting the lads ready for a performance against Leicester because there's 75,000 people who will show up.

"We have an obligation and the players feel that. They have the obligation to do better, they have looked in the mirror and their reactions have shown they have thought about it themselves."

Van Nistelrooy was quizzed on his future again and said: "As I said on Wednesday, I came in to help as an assistant and as a coach and in this bit as well as an interim as well in a short spell.

"And then in any other capacity. We will all be backing him [Ruben Amorim] and helping him to get Manchester United to where we all want it to be. We're early in [the season].

"And I think the performances and the spirit the players showed on Wednesday and today gives us a foundation to build on. With this spirit and fight, the qualities will come out and be shown. That's the foundation to build on and there's time to improve our ranking in the table."

The 1-1 draw with Chelsea leaves United 13th in the Premier League table, six points adrift of the Champions League places. United have won just 12 points this season, their worst return after 10 games of a league campaign since 1986/87.
