Ruud van Nistelrooy to Rangers swirl may have answer as love affair endures despite Man Utd sliding doors moment
Rangers may already have a clue over potentially replacing under-fire boss Philippe Clement with Ruud van Nistelrooy following his Manchester United exit.
Following the arrival of Ruben Amorim from Sporting, the Old Trafford assistant boss has been shown the door along after leading the club to a four game unbeaten run following the departure of Erik ten Hag. After signing off his spell in United dugout with a 3-0 win over Leicester, the former PSV Eindhoven boss has been backed to make a quick-fire return to management by former teammate Rio Ferdinand with the rumour mill ramping up over a switch to the Scottish Premiership.
He said: "His audition couldn't have gone any better and I think, knowing him, there was a steely determination underneath that said, 'I'm going to put myself in the best position, either to stay at the club in some capacity or someone else is going to say we need you as a manager'. He looked the part and he produced."
The Eredvisie-winning boss came close to signing for Rangers during his playing days before making the move to Manchester United. However, despite snubbing a switch to Govan in his playing days, after stepping into management he has fessed up to his love of the Ibrox cauldron. Before taking his PSV side to the stadium back in 2022 in a Champions League qualifier, he said: "The atmosphere at Ibrox is great.”
"Rangers are a great club and I have experienced the atmosphere at Ibrox myself. They made it to the Europa League Final, of course, so they clearly have a good squad."
Belgian boss Clement appeared to ease the mounting pressure he faced heading into the international break with back-to-back league wins over St Mirren and Hearts either side of a battling for a Europa League point against Olympiacos. But amid concerns over the performances so far this season by the Light Blues, some fans have suggested van Nistelrooy should get the nod after exiting the Premier League giants.
One punter on X quizzed: "If Philippe Clement goes before Christmas (and I don’t think he will), who could step in? Ruud van Nistelrooy?" Another added: "Rangers should go and get Ruud Van Nistelrooy as their next manager." A concerned fan: "They should if they can afford him."
Dick Advocaat revealed to the Sunday Mail back in 2001 regarding his move for the striker: "We could have brought van Nistelrooy into Ibrox so I called his agent because he comes from the same town in Holland where I was brought up. "But he told me that there's no way Ruud will come to Scotland. Van Nistelrooy has made up his mind to go to the Premier League."
The Dutchman has a clear admiration for the Premiership giants and after leaving United may be eyeing a way back in to another massive club. Could Rangers tempt him to replace Clement?
