SAINTS are reportedly among four Premier League clubs monitoring Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson ahead of the January transfer window.

Wilson, 32, is yet to make an appearance in any competition this season for Eddie Howe's Magpies due to a back injury.

But the nine-time England international scored 47 goals in 95 Premier League matches since arriving at St James' Park from AFC Bournemouth in 2020.

Coventry-born Wilson is nearing a return from injury with Howe looking to after the international break for his potential re-introduction.

The Sun have reported that Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Southampton are all monitoring the forward ahead of the January window.

They believe Brentford are in pole position and see Wilson as the ideal replacement for Ivan Toney but add Fulham are keen and have money spare.

Wilson is also out of contract next summer, meaning it is the last chance for Newcastle to cash in on his sale before he is able to move on for free in July.

Saints are currently operating with Cameron Archer up front and Paul Onuachu as his backup following another injury to Ross Stewart.

Onuachu was expected to depart over the summer with the likes of Turkish sides Trabzonspor and Fenerbache making offers for the Nigerian.
