Billy Gilmour has revealed that Napoli boss Antonio Conte is personally helping him to learn Italian.

The Scotland midfielder has impressed for Gli Azzurri in recent weeks after initially making a slow start in Naples following his £12million switch from Brighton but was warmly embraced by his manager after being substituted late on in his team's impressive 2-0 win against AC Milan at San Siro in midweek.

Gilmour, 23, knows it will take time to learn the lingo in Serie A but hopes he will get there with Conte's backing. Speaking to DAZN, he said: "I am fit and well, I’m enjoying it. Of course, we are doing well as a team, so we want to keep building on that. The coach has been really good. Of course, I don’t speak Italian yet, and I need to learn, but he’s been helping me in training."

The Scotland star's comments come shortly after compatriot and Napoli teammate Scott McTominay also hinted that Conte - a three time Scudetto winner as a manager in his spells at Juventus and Inter Milan - and the rest of the squad are lending a hand in trying to teach him a new language. “Italian is not easy, because I speak fast", McTominay stated. "But whenever I listen to people in Italian, they speak very fast! Over the last 2-3 weeks, I picked up little bits in training sessions, the hotel, in the city."

Napoli's five-game winning streak in Serie A came crashing down with a 3-0 home defeat to Napoli, with both Gilmour and McTominay included by Conte from the start. However, the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona side remain three points clear of nearest rivals Atalanta at the top of the table after the first 11 matches.
