Ben Doak has certainly enjoyed his international break after being handed his first starts for Scotland, although his nation’s media are split on his latest performance.

The Liverpool loanee lined up alongside his Anfield teammate Andy Robertson as they helped Scotland to a goalless draw against Diogo Jota’s Portugal. The result handed Steve Clarke’s side their first point in this year’s Nations League, and left Cristiano Ronaldo fuming.

Doak was handed his second start in just four days, having made his full debut against Croatia at the weekend. The 18-year-old earned rave reviews for his performance in Zagreb, having played a big part in Scotland’s opener during the 2-1 defeat.

The teenager was handed an even tougher test at Hampden Park on Tuesday, and didn’t have as much joy with his performance. His rating in the Edinburgh Evening News reflected that, with Doak earning a 5/10 for his display against Portugal.

“Quiet to start but slowly got to grips with having to track back while also hold some attacking threat,” the outlet remarked. “A few loose passes but some flashes of quality too. Good for his development to be exposed to this kind of challenge.”

The Glasgow Times though were impressed once again, handing Doak a 7/10 rating and saying: “The teenage protege showed no shortage of confidence by running at Antonio Silva and Joao Cancelo regularly when given the opportunity to get on the ball.

“The winger played his defence into trouble with a tippy-tappy pass inside, but the Portuguese couldn’t capitalise on the situation right after half-time.

“Probably came inside too often rather than looking to go round the outside to the byline, but another positive showing from the young man.”

Doak will now head back to club duties as he returns to Middlesbrough, having joined the Championship club on a season-long loan during the summer. The youngster will come up against Bristol City on Saturday as he looks to add to his tally, having scored one goal in five appearances so far this season.

Liverpool.com says: There are clearly big expectations for Doak up in Scotland, and it is difficult to gauge whether they have played a part in some of the rave reviews he’s got over the last couple of games for his country. It’s important Liverpool fans don’t get too carried away, as the 18-year-old still has a lot more development ahead of him before he can be truly considered a potential heir to Mohamed Salah back at Anfield.
