Hopes over a permanent transfer for exciting Leicester City loanee Facundo Buonanotte will be foiled by Brighton’s shrewdness, former striker Alan Smith believes.

Although still only 19 years of age, Buonanotte has been one of the stars of City’s season so far and many fans will be hoping he stays beyond next summer, even if the club have to splash a club-record fee to sign him. Former City and Arsenal forward Smith thinks his old club should look to do the deal.

But he also knows the unlikelihood of that coming off. Brighton have proven themselves to be one of the smartest operators in the transfer window in recent years and it would be a surprise if they let such a promising player go before giving him a chance at the Amex Stadium.

“If Leicester can, they should try and sign Facundo Buonanotte,” Smith told Instant Casino. “I’m not sure if Brighton would allow that, they’re such a shrewdly-run club that it’s difficult to see them just giving up talent like him.

“Brighton probably view his period at Leicester as a great opportunity for Buonanotte to get regular game-time and take him back with that experience behind him. He's young and has a lot of improving to do before he's top class, but to be playing well for a team like Leicester who are in a different situation to Brighton as he has, he’ll certainly be an exciting talent going forwards wherever he ends up.”

Buonanotte has contributed to five goals so far, scoring three and setting up two more. That puts him joint-15th in the Premier League and with only three players from bottom-half clubs ahead of him: Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, and Everton’s Dwight McNeil.
