Simon Jordan slams Evangelos Marinakis over Nottingham Forest ban
Simon Jordan has accused Evangelos Marinakis of failing to act as the 'standard-bearer' he is expected to be as Nottingham Forest owner.
The Forest owner was recently hit with a five-game stadium ban for 'improper behaviour' in the immediate aftermath of the club's only Premier League defeat so far this term - a 1-0 home loss to Fulham. It was later revealed in the Football Association's publication of the Independent Regulatory Commission's report that his exact actions were spitting on the floor as match officials walked past him.
"It's pretty unpleasant behaviour. He's given an explanation and his explanation will have plausible deniability about it. I will suspect it was probably illustrating some contempt and disdain," Jordan responded on talkSPORT.
The former Crystal Palace chairman was disgusted by the actions Marinakis is accused of, and in his following rant would go on to criticise the Greek for failing to maintain the standards a man in his powerful position should.
He continued: "I had assumed his stadium ban had been to do with being involved in the correspondence that was sent to the FA - that was what the five-game ban was for, wasn't it? It wasn't - it was for this.
"This is an ultimate sign of contempt in the context of a sporting environment. This is an ultimate disdain scenario.
"It’s unbecoming irrespective of whether you are smoking cigars or you’re hacking up, to spit on the floor in public in front of other people when you occupy a position of influence or authority and standard bearing, isn’t a look that you should want."
Telling Marinakis how he is expected to behave, Jordan added: "I think there is an inherent responsibility to be beyond reproach, you need to set standards and examples to those that work for you because if you can't do that yourself then others won't do it around you.
"There is an element of standard-bearer, the person that sets the standards, the person that expects the people to behave in a certain way must have discipline and respect. A culture that is based upon an inherent understanding of his responsibility.
"It shows a lack of elegance, a lack of standards, a lack of class. It shows an expectation you can do as you want, how you want, when you want. I thought it was difficult to actually exclude someone from something they own, but you cannot behave this way."
After Marinakis had been charged with misconduct, Forest released a statement announcing they had appealed against the decision. The owner was not at the City Ground for Monday night's win against Crystal Palace, and the remainder of the ban would see him miss matches against Leicester City, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Arsenal.
