After a soggy start to the day the weather cleared in time for the competitors to take part in Falmouth Rotary Club’s 11th annual Run Mawnan event.

More than 230 runners of all ages gathered at Carwinion Playing Field to take part in the races on three different routes through the village.

Sammy Jo of Embrace Dance Fitness got everyone in the mood with a lively warm up before the start at 10am, and Mawnan WI and other village organisations ran sideshows to entertain the spectators.

Anna Harrold of Truro Running Club set a new course record for the 10k race, finishing in the extremely fast time of 38.06 and beating the first man, Robert Smith, by just under four minutes. Both won dinner, bed and breakfast for two at the Budock Vean Hotel.

The first runner to finish the 5K event, in a fast time of 17.24, was 17-year-old Joe Wylie of Cornwall Athletic Club. He won the first prize of dinner, bed and breakfast for two at Hotel Meudon.

The first female home on the 5k was Jennifer Dunstan, also of Cornwall AC, in 21.39, who also won a prize of dinner, bed and breakfast for two at Hotel Meudon.

The one-mile children’s fun run was as popular as ever with 78 primary school aged children sprinting round the village in a race to the finish. The winner was Eli Peters followed closely by Orson Barnes and Herbie Wilson.

The first girl across the line was Lexi Harrold, followed by Taylor Easterbrook and Meredith Holway.

Rotarian Rod Allday, chairman of the Run Mawnan committee, said: “Once again we are pleased to have staged such a successful event for the village.

"It was great to have additional support from Mawnan WI with their stalls, adding to the village fete atmosphere.

"As always, we are extremely grateful to all the local businesses who have supported us by providing some great prizes, and to all the volunteers who marshal the course and help in the event field.

"The event raised £2500 for charity and as usual we will aim to distribute half of the proceeds within the village. We welcome applications from local organisations for our consideration and in the first instance they should contact us at runmawnan@gmail.com”
