On what proved to be a brutal day for managers, Southampton added to the list of casualties with the swift sacking of Russell Martin following the Saints' 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.

Martin, who guided Southampton to promotion via the play-offs last season, has overseen just a single win this year and they remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from 16 league matches. Martin followed Gary O'Neil (Wolves), Des Buckingham (Oxford) and Matt Taylor (Bristol Rovers) in getting the push on Sunday.

The early frontrunner to take up the vacancy at St Mary's is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who arrived at Hillsborough last season and kept the Owls in the Championship. He has, this year, guided them into play-off contention at almost the halfway point of the season.

West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan, whose Baggies sit three points and one place above Wednesday, has been linked with pretty much every Premier League job that has become available since committing his long-term future to The Hawthorns in February of last year when signing a new contract.

David Moyes and Graham Potter, both of who are looking to get back into work having both previously held various Premier League jobs, are also towards the top of the betting market, as are Lee Carsley, Michael Carrick and Rafael Benitez. Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard, currently in the Saudi Pro League, is 20/1 as things stand and former Coventry City manager Mark Robins is a bigger 25/1 shot.
